" Quickly you and Cardinal Musial
overpower Dr Dee and tie him up with
the bellrope. After a few ecumenical
"prods from the Cardinal, Dee confesses,
<Okay, you got me. I killed the Abbot
in the confessional with the atomizer.
"It was such a simple method, I'm sur-
prised schoolchildren haven't thought
of it yet. The rest of my partners all
got cold feet and threatened to go to
Costello so I offed them with dispatch.

It sure is hard to get good help these
days. If I were you, Inspector, uh...>
" <la Mort.> you reply.
" <I thought so. Anyway, if I were
you I'd keep an eye on the Papal Bull.
Good luck getting out of here with that
fanatic Musial helping you."

This is the scenario if you name Dr Dee the murderer and he actually is
the murderer. Calhoon wanted to be fair and made the chances of either
"man being the murderer fifty-fifty, but still couldn't resist having
Dr Dee remind la Mort that Cardinal Musial still had reason to keep the
Bull secret. In Calhoon's mind, covering up prostitution, pornography,
and explosives is not as feasible a motive for mass premeditated murder
as is obedience to the representative of God on earth.
