" Quickly you and Dr Dee overpower
Cardinal Musial and tie him up with
the bellrope. As the Cardinal contin-
ues to protest his innocence you hear
Dr Dee chuckling then feel a dull pain
behind your ear.
" You wake up a moment later to find
yourself and the Cardinal tied together
"and Dr Dee preparing to leave. <Well,
"Inspector, uh...>
&
" <la Mort.> you reply.
" <I thought so. It looks as though
you misread a clue or two. When the
Abbot became too suspicious about my
business activities I had to off him in
the confessional with the atomizer. My
partners all got cold feet when Musial
came into town so I had to silence them
too. Their gullibility amazes me.
&
" <Good luck getting out of here.> Dr
Dee says as he leaves you and Cardinal
Musial to your separate miseries.

This is what happens if you decide to help Dr Dee when he is the
murderer. Even though Calhoon sympathized with most of the things Dr
"Dee represented, he made the doctor choose to murder a half dozen
people just to cover up his relatively petty kingpinship.
"As explained in my annotation of Calhoon's MURDER IN THE MUSEUM, la
Mort's original name was le Merde. LOADSTAR's almost pathological fear
of unsubtly offending anyone dictated that the name be changed and la
Mort seemd to be the obvious choice.
Back in 1986 Calhoon sent an early version of MONASTERY to Jim
"Butterfield, noted Commodorean guru. Jim wrote back a nice long
"letter, much of which addressed the proper French modifier for
"<merde>. Unfortunately, the name change rendered Mr. Butterfield's
excellent opinion moot.
