"The cover letter reads, <This document
is definitely authentic. It was found
by Novice Scotia in a small catacomb
under the altar. The catacomb was
discovered on St Swithins Day when the
altar mysteriously exploded during the
ceremony.> It is signed by Abbot
Costello.

Calhoon never explains how Abbot Costello was able to definitely
"determine that the Papal Bull of 303 is authentic, but it is vitally
important to the plot that it not be a fake. And not only must it not
"be a fake, the Bull must be of such importance that the infrastructure
of modern organized religion must be threatened by its revelations.
Calhoon often thought about what it would take to subvert two thousand
years of tradition and all he could come up with (barring a miracle)
was something that implied that it was all a joke.
In <The Name of the Rose> it was a manuscript by Aristotle which
celebrated joy and laughter over solemnity that was deemed so
subversive by the Abbot of that 14th Century Abbey. Calhoon decided to
strike closer to the heart of the matter and implicate a more ancient
"suspect, Moses.
