Class 2 (2388) & V.17 FAX Upgrades for the PM14400FXSA
======================================================
Effective 3-15-93, owners of the PM14400FXSA and PM14400FX internal modems
will be able to call the Practical Technical Support line (805-496-7707) and
order either upgrade.
The cost for the Class 2 EPROM is $29 and includes shipping. California
residents must also pay the applicable California sales tax. This is a
'field upgrade' which can be performed by the modem user.
The cost of the data pump exchange for one which supports V.17 14.4Kbps
FAX is $99 and includes the EPROM mentioned above. This will be a factory
upgrade, requiring that the modem be returned to the factory for installation
of the new data pump and EPROM. Data pumps will not be shipped to end users
for a 'field upgrade.' California sales tax is applicable on orders from
California residents.
All V.17 upgrades will be handled via the RMA process. This means that the
customer wanting to upgrade his data pump must call the Practical Technical
Support line at 805-496-7707 and request an RMA for this upgrade. The RMA
number will have a V17 suffix and this number must be on the modem package
when the unit is returned. The in-house time for this upgrade will be 2
business days or less.
Many of the PM14400FXSA modems in the installed base already have the V.17
capable data pump. The new AT&T data pump was incorporated into all units
shipped after they became available. Therefore, you may be able to obtain
V.17 operation with nothing more than the EPROM upgrade to a version 2.xx
code. Determination of the type of data pump in your modem can be made by
the content of the ATI3 command response string.
The user can determine if V.17 FAX will require a data pump exchange by issuing
the ATI3 command as follows:
ati3
PM14400FXPPM [BA4] Version 2.17 (c) Practical Peripherals Inc., 1992, 1993.
^ ^
OK
The "4" above the first caret above means that this modem has a data pump
which supports V.17 FAX. The "2" above the second caret, indicates the
firmware in this modem supports both Class 2 (2388) and V.17 FAX.
All orders for the Class 2 FAX EPROM or orders for the data pump exchange must
be made by calling PPI tech support at 805-496-7707. We will not be able to
handle these requests either here in PPIFORUM or on the PPI BBS.
Like all other things in the computer industry, modem technology moves
forward. At PPI, we try to provide an upgrade path for our customers whenever
possible. However, as noted in all the Practical manuals:
"Practical Peripherals, Inc., reserves the right to make improvements
to the hardware, firmware, and software described in this manual at any
time and without notice."
Feature enhancements have been made to the PM14400FXSA modem since its
introduction. These added features are now available to current owners
in accordance with the details in this file.
