Tatami mats are a kind of Japanese carpeting which is usually only in dining
rooms of houses and at Japanese inns. Never walk on tatami with your shoes
on. Many resutoran have raised areas where you can sit on tatami mats(on the
floor). You must remove your shoes before you step up onto the platform.
Once on the tatami you may sit any way that makes you comfortable.
To tell the time of day we use the words ji=hours and pun=minutes.
There are some variations, but we will ignore them for now. For example:
ni ji = 2:00 | hachi ji ni ju go pun = 8:25
yon ji = 4:00 | ju ji yon ju nana pun = 10:47

You might need to direct a taxi back to your hotel. It is a good policy
to bring a card from the hotel to give to a taxi driver. Otherwise you will
need to know these words: masugu=straight hidari=left
migi=right
To direct a taxi you can use these words without any verbs.
When you sit down at a sushi bar there will already be hashi and a small
bowl for soy sauce at your place. Take the soy sauce container and pour
about 1/8" of sauce into the bowl. Next take a small amount of wasabi or
green horseradish with your hashi and mix it into the soy sauce. Dip your
sushi into the sauce before eating. Wasabi is very hot so be careful!
