Labels:text | mammal | animal | plant OCR: Carr Much of Wicken is covered by bushes and small trees which can grow up to 15 metres high. This is called carr' and is made up of species like common buckthorn, willows and alder. Sometimes larger trees such as birch, ash and a few oaks have grown up through the carr. The carr has grown up since the cutting of sedge stopped earlier this century. Mosses, ferns and liverworts flourish in the carr as well as nettles, including a stingless nettle. These plants like shade which the bushes and small trees of the carr provide. The carr also provides a good nesting and feeding site for birds. In the winter you can see long-tailed tits and bullfinches. Foxes, stoats weasels and even deer use the carr for shelter. <K>
