OCR: LODES,DITCHES DYKES & DRAINS At Wicken, the freshwater habitats consist of the lodes, ditches, dykes, drains, lakes and ponds. They are vital to the survival of the Fen. The bodies of water support many kinds of plants and animals. Swans, herons and great crested grebes can be seen as well as smaller animals such as fish, toads and newts. Water is essential for birdlife and snipe, redshank and lapwing all prefer to breed around open water. Grass snakes can sometimes be sighted swimming on the surface of the water. Some of the smallest animals at Wicken live in the water, such as the tiny larvae of mosquitoes. A variety of dragonflies skim the water in the summer. <K>
