Born in MontrΘal, the third son of an important merchant of the colony, Iberville is the very personification of "la petite guerre". Beginning with the James Bay campaign of 1686, he fought the English on land and sea for twenty years. Hudson Bay, the New York-New England frontier, Acadia, Newfoundland, Louisiana, and the Caribbean were the theatres for his exploits. His astounding feats in combat have made him the most renowned son of New France, indeed the first truly Canadian hero. In 1699 he became the first Canadian Knight of the Order of Saint-Louis.
