Frontenac returned for a second term as governor just after New France sustained the greatest single disaster of its history, the Iroquois raid on Lachine of August 1689. The indomitable governor determined upon reprisals, and in mid-winter 1690 dispatched three detachments of Canadian militiamen and allied Indians on lightning raids upon Schenectady in New York Colony, and Salmon Falls and Fort Loyal in New England. This watercolour by H.P De Rinzy re-creates one of the governor's expeditions to maintain French rule in Canada.
