Employment for women was very limited in black communities. They usually worked as domestic servants in white homes. Rose Fortune, the daughter of Loyalists who settled in Annapolis Royal, was an independent lady and went into business for herself. She began with a wheelbarrow, meeting the boats arriving from Saint John and carrying trunks and other baggage to any location in town. This was an unusual occupation for a woman, and Rose was known by everyone in the community. Her family continued and expanded her activities to form a trucking business.
