"Negresses Selling Mayflowers in the Market Place, Halifax 1872".
Blacks living near Halifax and Saint John supplemented their meagre earnings by carrying goods to market. They sold brooms, farm produce, blueberries, mayflowers and later, baskets and firewood. The baskets used by the women in this picture from the Canadian Illustrated News are not the same as those made by black basketmakers today; they may have been made primarily for personal use.
