Dan Taylor and Alex Diggs, Loch Lomond, New Brunswick, ca. 1900.
Blacks served as members of the militia throughout the nineteenth century, and special black companies were formed in some militia battalions. The two men in this picture were members of the Saint John County Militia. Quite often militiamen had to provide their own uniforms and weapons. In this picture, one man is wearing the uniform of the battalion, while the other has no uniform and is carrying his own rifle.
