Backup Exec for NetWare - Evaluation Version
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a 30 DAY EVALUATION VERSION of Backup Exec for NetWare.
The evaluation period will begin the first time that the Job
Manager NLM is loaded. The software will be fully functional
for the first 30 days. Once the evaluation period has expired,
jobs will no longer be processed by the Job Manager. However,
you will be able to use all of the other functions in the
software. When you purchase and reinstall Backup Exec, all of
the user options, jobs, catalogs and job histories from the
evaluation version will remain.
Please contact Arcada Software at 800-3-ARCADA or 407-333-7500
to inquire about purchasing Backup Exec for NetWare.
Continuing with the installation of this product means that
you understand and agree with the following terms and
conditions:
1. This evaluation package ceases to provide backup and restore
capability following the 30 day evaluation period.
2. Arcada Software is not liable for any damages resulting from
the use of this product; including but not limited to, lost

1. INSTALLATION NOTES
=====================================================================
Version 7.01 clients (BEWIN.EXE, BEOS2.EXE, BEDOS.COM and
BE.NLM) may not be used with previous versions of Backup Exec
for NetWare. New functionality added into version 7.01 has
caused various system database formats to change, along with an
entirely new synchronization mechanism based on NetWare Core
Protocol Extensions (NCPE). Because of this, the new clients
cannot access old databases, nor can old clients access the new
databases. If you need to run both versions of Backup Exec
clients, you will have to install the version 7.01 client(s) to
different locations on your local hard disk.
2. RELEASE NOTES
=====================================================================
Conner (Maynard) SCSI Controller
--------------------------------
The Conner (Maynard) 16-bit SCSI controller does not support
concurrent operations.
Existing Jobs
Backup Exec v5.0x Only
----------------------
Existing jobs will be targeted to the first available partition
by default. To choose a specific partition for a job, edit the
job using the job schedule feature in one of the Backup Exec
clients.
Existing Jobs
Backup Exec v5.0x with Advanced Autoloader Module
-------------------------------------------------
Existing jobs will be targeted to an invalid partition by
default. You will be prompted to either delete the jobs or
retarget them to a valid partition. These jobs will not run
until a valid partition is chosen.
Windows 95 Agent
----------------
Using the Backup Exec Windows 95 agent in a token-ring/ethernet
network environment:
Backup Exec for NetWare Version 7.01 resolves the problem
of losing connections when performing backups of a Windows
95 workstation across a token-ring/ethernet bridge.
If both the Windows 95 agent and the backup server are on
the same type of network (both on token-ring or both on
ethernet) then no additional steps are required for the
Windows 95 agent to function properly.
However, if the backup server is on an ethernet network
which uses a network bridge to backup workstations on the
token-ring network, then you must modify the value of the
"GRFS_max_buffer_size" option within the backup server's
options file (BESRVR.CFG). You should set the value
of this option to "240".
Example: GRFS_max_buffer_size = 240
No steps are required if the backup server is on the
token-ring network and the Windows 95 agent is on the
ethernet network.
3. WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 7.01?
=====================================================================
Concurrent device support
-------------------------
Up to twenty-eight (28) simultaneous operations are supported on
each NetWare backup server. This allows you to simultaneously
perform multiple backup and restore operations on multiple tape
drives. Support for multi-drive autoloaders has been added to
the Advanced Autoloader Module.
Console command execution before and after a job
------------------------------------------------
Backup Exec jobs can be configured to execute a system console
command on the backup server to stop or start other programs on
the server. For example, you can automatically stop a database
application before a backup job begins, and automatically
restart the database application after the backup job ends.
Software compression with Agent Accelerator(TM)
-----------------------------------------------
Now, with Agent Accelerator, you can configure Backup Exec to
compress the data on the remote server before sending it to the
backup server. This improves performance dramatically on slower
network wire technologies, such as 4MB/sec token ring or when
backing up over a WAN. Agent Accelerator uses proven STAC
Electronics LZS compression for software data compression.
Automatic job history log printing capability
---------------------------------------------
Backup Exec can automatically route job results to any network
printer, even on a different server. (Note: Only bindery based
print queues are supported.)
SNMP Agent
----------
Centralized status monitoring is available from a NetWare SNMP
compatible console, such as NetWare NMS.
Job Manager monitor
-------------------
The status of the tape system and all tape sessions can be
monitored from any workstation running a Backup Exec client as
well as from the server console. A "gas gauge" indicates the
progress of the current operation by showing the percentage
completed.
Ability to read SIDF and ARCserve (version 4 and 5) tapes
---------------------------------------------------------
With the ability to read SIDF and ARCserve (version 4 and 5)
tapes, Backup Exec makes it easy to transition from Cheyenne
ARCserve, Novell's Sbackup utility or other SIDF compliant
backup solutions. (Note: Only those SIDF tapes which conform
to ECMA-208 are supported. Also, ARCserve backups created with
Novell SMS enabled cannot be restored. ARCserve's default is
not to use SMS for backup.)
Flat file restore
-----------------
This feature allows the flexibility either to retain the
directory tree during a restore or simply to restore all
selected files to a single subdirectory.
Hardware compression enabling/disabling
---------------------------------------
On a partition basis, the administrator can enable or disable
hardware compression on tape drives that support this feature.
Performance tuning
------------------
On a partition basis, the administrator can configure the block
size used to write to the tape media, the number of buffers
allocated from memory for data transfer, and the number of
buffers that are filled in memory prior to beginning data
transfer to tape. Backup Exec automatically tailors these for
performance, and these values should only be changed in
consultation with Arcada Technical Support.
Job rerouting on fatal tape device failure
------------------------------------------
On a partition basis, the administrator can configure Backup
Exec to reroute jobs to an alternate partition on the same
backup server or a remote backup server in the event of a fatal
tape device error.
Enhanced Windows 95 Agent
-------------------------
An enhanced version of the Backup Exec Windows 95 agent is
provided in this release. An option to display an agent status
and statistics window is included in the enhanced agent.
4. COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION FOR DRIVES AND CONTROLLERS
=====================================================================
Loaders and tape drives can be used on the same backup server
by following these configuration rules:
1) The SCSI addresses of tape drives on a controller must
precede the loader SCSI address settings.
2) The SCSI ID of the loader arm must precede the SCSI address
of the drives in the loader.
3) In multiple drive loaders, the SCSI IDs must be in the same
order as the drive elements (i.e., Tape Drive 1 must have a
lower SCSI ID than Tape Drive 2).
Compatibility information for drives and controllers can be
found in a separate file named SYS:BKUPEXEC\HARDWARE.DOC after
installation of Backup Exec. This file can also be found on the
first installation diskette. You may wish to print a copy of
this file for later reference.
This file is also viewable from the Job Manager menus under
Options/Backup Exec Information/View Hardware Information, as
well as View/Backup Exec Information/View Hardware Information.
Both of these menus are selectable via key combinations from
the Job Manager's main screen.
5. LIMITATIONS
=====================================================================
a. When accessing servers with older versions of the NetWare
STREAMS and TLI NLM modules, Backup Exec clients or the
Job Manager may hang while scanning the network for servers
during initialization. If this occurs, you should update
these modules to newer versions.
b. If you are using the Backup Exec Windows client and your
screen "blacks out" followed by a workstation hang, you
must obtain updated IPX drivers from Novell's NetWire
CompuServe forum. Updated files are found in the
VLMUPx.EXE, NET33x.EXE, WINDRx.EXE and NWDLLx.EXE self-
extracting archives. These files are available from
the NOVFILES area in CompuServe's NetWire Forum.
c. When using Backup Exec agent software, you may want to
first type CASTOFF ALL on the workstation. If a message
is sent to a workstation that is running the Backup Exec
agent software, the Job Manager or Client software may lose
its connection to the agent, or performance may be severely
degraded.
To turn off broadcasts on a workstation logged into a 4.x
server, use SEND /A=N instead of CASTOFF ALL.
d. If the backup server is running the NFS.NAM name space
during a restore, directories that are restored are
always restored in lower case. This occurs with the
1.20c version of NFS.NAM on 3.x servers and the
1.27b version of NFS.NAM on 4.01 servers. If you are
using name spaces on your server that have case
sensitive directory names other than NFS, you may want
to unload NFS.NAM prior to performing a restore. This
problem may be fixed in a future release of NetWare.
e. The Backup Exec DOS Agent (also used for Windows) does not
support the Microsoft-supplied MSIPX.COM driver which comes
standard with Windows for Workgroups version 3.1. In order
to use the Backup Exec DOS agent under Windows for
Workgroups 3.1, you must install Novell's ODINSUP.COM
driver instead of the MSIPX.COM driver.
An outline of the procedure to modify a Windows for
Workgroups 3.1 environment to use the ODINSUP driver is
found in the README.TXT file that is installed on the
workstation as part of the Backup Exec Windows workstation
SETUP program. If there are Windows for Workgroups 3.1
workstations that will run the Backup Exec DOS Agent, the
network administrator should review the procedure outlined
and create a customized procedure for the network users.
If you are using Windows for Workgroups version 3.11,
you should see the WFW3_11.WRI file in the WIN31 directory
for information about upgrading your network interface to
use the ODI drivers. By default, this file is installed
into SYS:BKUPEXEC/WIN_WS/WIN31.
f. If you are running the Backup Exec Job Manager with an
Adaptec controller and the tape drive is powered off
during an operation, you may need to DOWN your file
server to restart the Job Manager. Adaptec's ASPI manager
does not correctly handle this problem and results in
the Job Manager appearing to be "hung" while trying to
complete an operation. The file server will continue to
function properly, but you will need to DOWN the file
server and reboot it in order to use Backup Exec again.
g. There is a problem with the 3Com 3C503 card installed in
a NetWare server that causes it to hang during extended
periods of heavy network traffic. When this problem
occurs, you will receive "LAN receive buffer limit
reached. All buffers are in use" errors while
performing remote server backups (this applies only to
Backup Exec - Enterprise Edition). If you encounter this
error, you should upgrade your network card.
h. If the Job Manager (BEMGR.NLM) or the NetWare Client
(BE.NLM) displays an "out of memory" error and you see a
message at the NetWare console "Alloc short term memory
allocator requests exceeded the configuration limit", you
must give NetWare more memory. Failure to do so may cause
memory corruption or a server abend.
For 3.11 Servers: Type
"set maximum alloc short term memory=xxxxxxxx"
where xxxxxxxx is 50kb to 16mb.
It is set to 2mb by default.
For 3.12 Servers Type
"set maximum alloc short term memory=xxxxxxxx"
where xxxxxxxx is 50kb to 32mb.
It is set to 8mb by default.
i. When you run out of disk space on your catalog volume, you
can move your catalogs to a different volume. If you
do this and encounter the "Unable to initialize job" on
the Job Manager screen, you will need to go into the
<volume>:\BKUPEXEC\HISTORY directory and manually delete
any 0 byte files that exist.
j. Some values in the E-mail options are not validated.
These include: server names, paths, login names and
passwords, and E-mail addresses. If E-mail does not seem
to be working, you may have made an error entering E-mail
setup information in the options window.
k. If the backup server runs out of short term memory while
backing up an SMS device, the files being processed
are backed up as corrupted files.
l. The screen saver LOCK.EXE that comes with Novell DOS 7.0/
Personal NetWare is incompatible with the DOS Agent. If
you are using the DOS Agent to back up this workstation,
this screen saver cannot be running.
m. If you back up directories with the Delete-Inhibit or
Rename-Inhibit attributes set, and then attempt to restore
those directories, SMS errors will be written to the
history log. The following message will appear in the
log file: "Invalid data (an unexpected directory
trailer) was found". All data is correctly restored,
however, so the message can be safely ignored. Novell is
aware of this condition.
n. In the NFS name space on NetWare volumes and Unix
workstations, if there are multiple directories which
differ only by case (e.g., test_dir vs. TEST_DIR)
within a given subdirectory, only one of those
directories will be backed up.
o. During disaster recovery, if you re-install the Bindery
or the NDS Tree containing the Backup Exec account and
queue information, the job scheduler will go offline
with error 254 or 156. To recover from this condition,
either go into the options menu, or simply exit and
restart the Job Manager. You may also encounter error
254 by running DSREPAIR.NLM while the Job Manager is
loaded.
p. In the Job Manager SNMP configuration window, options appear
that allow you to set the priority at which traps are sent
to SNMP management workstations. To retain true SNMP
functionality, the filter settings should be set directly at
the management workstation. The Job Manager sends all traps
if the SNMP setting is set to any value other than zero.
q. When using HP OpenView, the ARCADA.TDF file should be
used instead of ARCADA.MIB. This file is found in the
SYS:\BKUPEXEC directory and should be placed into the
HP OpenView Trap Manager directory (e.g., \OV\TRAPMGR).
This is the Trap Definition File required by HP OpenView to
receive SNMP traps from Backup Exec. To replace this file
open the Monitor menu in HP OpenView and select
"Customize Traps...". In the dialog that appears,
press the "Load Traps..." button. Select ARCADA.TDF and
press OK. From the Customize Trap Alarms dialog
press OK. Backup Exec SNMP traps will now appear in the
Alarm Log.
6. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
=====================================================================
Q. I'm getting a "Tape Drive Not Found" message after running
BESTART.NCF. Why am I getting this message?
A. This message appears under the following conditions:
1. When you are trying to use an unsupported tape drive - Check
the HARDWARE.DOC for a list of supported tape drives and make
sure that your drive is in this list.
2. When the ASPI manager does not see the drive - Backup Exec
uses the tape drive's SCSI inquiry string to determine which
drivers to load for the drive. If you have more than one
ASPI controller in the server, make sure that the drivers for
the controller to which the tape drive is attached are being
loaded in the STARTUP.NCF file. You can run the BEDIAG
utility to view which controller the tape drives are attached
to, by using the following syntax:
LOAD BEDIAG /S /C
-----------
Q. I'm getting an error message "Error on Tape drive x" during a
backup (or utility) operation. What should I do?
A. If the error is either "Error: Media Failure (3)" or "Error:
Bad Write (5)", first try cleaning the tape drive. This is a
common problem with magnetic media drives and they should be
cleaned after approximately 20 hours of use. You may also have a
bad tape. If the tape has been in active use longer than six to
eight months, it is probably time to cycle the tape out of your
rotation scheme and get a new one.
If the error is "Hardware Failure (10)", the tape drive failed to
process the assigned command. Power off the drive and turn it
back on. If this error occurs on a regular basis, your tape
drive may need mechanical repair.
-----------
Q. I get a 'Public Symbol Error BuildTCB, DeBuildTCB, etc.' when
attempting to run BESTART.NCF. Why am I getting this?
A. The ASPI manager for your controller is not loaded. This is
common in controllers that do not load ASPI support by default.
Check the HARDWARE.DOC for currently supported controllers and
find your specific controller. It should show you the ASPI
manager that needs to be loaded for your controller.
-----------
Q. I have a Compaq on-board controller and get a 'Public Symbol
Error BuildTCB, DeBuildTCB, etc.' when attempting to run
BESTART.NCF. Why am I getting this?
A. The ASPI manager for your controller is not loaded. Load the
NLM called CPQSASPI.NLM in your AUTOEXEC.NCF. (See the previous
question.)
-----------
Q. I get the error "There are no restore targets readily
available, please select restore target in the backup sources
window" when trying to submit a restore job from my Windows
client. What should I do?
A. You must login to the workstation through the Backup Sources
window before the Windows client will allow a restore. This
error occurs when the password database has been disabled. In
the Backup Sources window, double click on the server. You will
be prompted for a login name and password. Once the name and
password are provided, you should be able to submit the restore
job.
-----------
Q. What are Backup Exec's Memory requirements for NetWare?
A. Backup Exec requires a minimum of 2.5 MB of memory over NetWare
system requirements. The amount of memory required increases
as additional tape devices are added. NetWare system
requirements are affected by many variables. To verify that
you have sufficient memory, type "load MONITOR.NLM" at the
server console. Select the menu option "Resource Utilization".
The window at the top of the screen will change to "Server
Memory Statistics". At the end of the "Cache Buffers" line, a
percentage number appears. This number should be between 60%
and 65%. A number below 60% can result in various problems. To
increase this number, unload some other NLM's that may be using
memory, or add more memory (RAM) to the system.
-----------
Q. I am running the Windows client under Windows for Workgroups
3.11. When I load the Windows client it hangs on "Scanning for
Agents". What's wrong?
A. Refer to item 'e', under the Limitations section of this file
for information on resolving this issue.
-----------
Q. I can see NetWare agents with the DOS client, but not the
Windows client. Why?
A. Your NetWare workstation requesters are out of date. You will
need to get the following NetWare updates for your workstation:
VLMUPx.EXE
WINDRx.EXE
NWDLLx.EXE
NET33x.EXE (If running older NETX).
Each of these files is available on the Arcada BBS, the NetWire
forum on CompuServe, WWW.NOVELL.COM or FTP.NOVELL.COM. These
self-extracting files have a text file contained with them that
explain how to properly set them up on your workstation.
