Command: File < F >
Purpose: Provide a menu of Filing Options and the Quit option.
Information:
Patternland weavings and designs are stored only in the
memory of the computer until you save them using a File
option.
Comments:
You should save your work regularly to guard against lost
data due to a power failure. Also, so you can backtrack on
your designing process, it is a good idea to save weavings
under "series" names like Design1, Design2, etc. so you can
load an older version if you don't like changes you made and
saved.
Each type of file Patternland makes has a special suffix,
like ".PWV" for weavings. Thus your file names can only be
the eight characters allowed by DOS for a filename prefix.
However, because of the varying suffixes, you can use the
same name for various types of files related to the same
weaving. For example, Design1.PWV might have a related
Design1.PWA file in which you had saved only the warp. The
suffixes for each type of file are given under help for that
option.
"Quit" is included as the last option of this menu to remind
you to save your work before exiting.

Command: Edit < E >
Purpose: Provide menus of Editing options.
Information:
All changes to the weaving or design take place through an
Edit option. Video and printer palette adjustments which do
not affect the weaving/design itself are made through the
Display and Print menus.
Comments:
Patternland has two distinct methods of editing weavings:
(1) a grid or board input screen which uses arrow keys or
mouse; and (2) numerical prompts for warp, weft, tieups,
colors, symbols. Both methods of editing are available
concurrently on each edit menu (except the design board
which has no numerical input); however, the method of input
used by New Weaving is determined by the Edit/Modes/Grid-
Checkerboard switch. Likewise, whether the board appears as
a grid or checkerboard is a Modes switch. And numerical
input can combine symbol and color selections with warp or
weft: this too is controlled by a Modes switch.

Command: Display < D >
Purpose: Provide menus of video related options.
Information:
Patternland displays weavings either in text/data mode, text
only scrolling mode, or one of your system's available
graphics modes. The warp, weft, and tieup data are
available in Text/Data mode displays and printouts.
The design board is displayed in graphics modes through
Display/Design and in text mode through Edit/Design.
Comments:
Options/Data, Options/Format, and Options/Modes all affect
text/data displays and printouts; Data and Format also
affect the Editor.
Edit Weaving provides a scrollable method of displaying
both the pattern draft and the warp and weft data
simultaneously.

Command: Print < P >
Purpose: Provide menus of printing options.
Information:
Patternland prints weavings either in text/data mode or an
available printer graphics mode--either method can be in
Black & White, 7-Color, or 16-color mixed palette modes.
The warp, weft, and tieup data are available in Text/Data
mode printouts. The design board can be printed in text
mode only using the current single warp and weft symbols.
Comments:
To achieve a graphics print of a design, first convert it
to a weaving with Weave Wizard, then print in graphics
mode.

Command: Options < O >
Purpose: Control Computer-Aided-Weaving and Select Modes
Information:
Options/Loom opens the gateway to controlling your loom with
Patternland. The other options all affect either the
editor, display options, print options, or a combination of
the three.
Comments:
Weaving options which affect several Patternland domains are
controlled here, e.g. the Data switches affect both text
displays, printing, and in some cases the editor.
Likewise, the warp- and weft-face weave switches are
contained in Options/Modes.

Command: Help < H >
Purpose: Menu--Access several full-screen help files
Information:
Most help is context-sensitive; press the help key for help
while a particular option is highlighted.
On this Help Menu, the introduction and several other
topics are available.
You can also read and write your own help files, or edit the
exiting help files using the File/Write File option. All
help files are standard ASCII files. You can use your own
word processor if it can save as an ASCII file.
There is no context help for the help menu itself; unlike
all other menus, topics may be selected with the help keys
in addition to pressing <Enter> or the Key character.
Comments:
Two keys provide context-sensitive help for any menu
option and from the window editors: < ? > or < / >.
You can also access context help from the Command Window by
prefacing a command with </>.
The full-screen help available from the help menu is
designed to introduce the program and supplement the context
help. You may wish to begin the learning process with
Help/Introduction.

Command: Setup < S >
Purpose: Configure the program for a variety of systems
Information:
Patternland can function with all IBM compatible equipment
with sufficient memory, from a monochrome non-graphics
system to a VGA PS/2. It works with both daisy wheel text
only printers and graphics printers. Setup options are
required to allow the program to function up to the
capibilities of your system. For each of the steps below,
press the Help key <?> for more information after
highlighting the option on the menu.
To configure Patternland the first time:
1. Choose Setup/Displays and select the correct Display.
2. Choose Setup/Colors if you wish to alter menu or
other program colors (this can wait until later).
3. Choose Setup/Save and <Y> to overwrite Patland.pwv.
4. Chose Setup/Printers and select your printer.
5a. If you want to save files on a different drive or
directory from the program files (e.g., B:),
choose File/Change/Weaving.
5b. If you have a two-drive floppy system, choose
File/Change/Help, and select B: for the help
files path.
5c. If 5a or 5b apply, return to setup and choose
Setup/File Paths.
6. Go to the main Help menu and begin by reading the
introduction, which suggests a learning path.
Comments:
Initially, Patternland assumes a monochrome system; you must
select your video system and Save/Setup in order to make
graphics available.
Likewise, the default printer driver will probably not be
appropriate for your particular printer. You must
Setup/Printers to make the correct printer driver avaiable.
Color Changes for a menu take effect only after the window
has closed. To see changes in the main menu, choose
File/Quit and press any key for menu instead of quitting.
