  5.     When the U.S. gave Patriot missile batteries to Israel to
  6. combat the Iraqi Scuds raining down on civilians during the gulf
  7. war, Washington forbade Jerusalem to export the technology. Now
  8. a U.S. intelligence report suggests that Israel may have
  9. supplied China with secrets of the Patriot. Israeli officials
  10. deny the charge, but the controversy has roiled relations with
  11. the U.S., already strained by American dethat the Shamir
  12. government stop building settlements in the occupied territories
  13. exchange for $10 billion in loan guarantees. The Wall Street
  14. Journal fueled the controversy by reporting that Israel is also
  15. suspected of having exported antitank missiles to South Africa
  16. as well as cluster bombs to Ethiopia and Chile.

  18.     "This is complete nonsense, absolute lies," Prime Minister
  19. Yitzhak Shamir declared last week to the Israeli newspaper
  20. Yediot Aharonoth. Dore Gold of the Jaffee Center for Strategic
  21. Studies at Tel Aviv University voiced a suspicion common in
  22. Israel: "What we're witnessing is a kind of psychological
  23. warfare between allies, particularly because Washington faced
  24. a very embarrassing moment after its failure to grab the Scud
  25. ship." But questions will linger because Israel has sold enough
  26. military technology to China in the past to make the latest
  27. charges seem plausible.
