  4.     For patients with certain chronic or terminal diseases, a
  5. marijuana cigarette can blunt the side effects of radical
  6. treatments. Advocates of alternative medicine claim, for
  7. example, that the drug helps cancer patients endure
  8. chemotherapy, comforts AIDS victims and eases eye pressure for
  9. those who suffer from glaucoma. Last week, however, the U.S.
  10. Public Health Service said it will no longer condone cannabis
  11. therapy because of the fear that the practice could harm people
  12. with weak immune systems. The Federal Government currently
  13. allows 13 people to use the drug legally, and had approved the
  14. treatment for 28 others. Under the ruling, those who now receive
  15. marijuana will continue treatment. The 28 new patients will be
  16. informed about alternative drug treatments.
