  4.     The infamous Mafia code of omerta, or silence, has been
  5. taking a beating lately. Salvatore (Sammy the Bull) Gravano, a
  6. witness against Gambino crime boss John Gotti in a New York City
  7. courtroom, is only the latest mobster to testify on the misdeeds
  8. of his cronies in exchange for lenient treatment. Last week
  9. Mafia gunmen appeared to send a brutal message to all would-be
  10. squealers by shooting and gravely wounding the sister of federal
  11. informer Peter (Fat Pete) Chiodo.

  13.     Patricia Capozzalo, a 38-year-old mother of three, was
  14. shot in the back and neck by masked men in front of her
  15. Brooklyn home. Investigators called the shooting highly unusual:
  16. female relatives of mobsters have traditionally been spared by
  17. avenging hit men.

  19.     Chiodo, who began cooperating with prosecutors after
  20. surviving an attempted Mob rubout last year, is scheduled to
  21. appear at the Gotti trial. Federal officials also regard him as
  22. a prime witness against alleged Lucchese crime boss Vittorio
  23. Amuso.
