PEOPLE, Page 73High Stakes
By MICHAEL QUINN
On the 19th of February, somebody gunned down a North
Carolina bail bondsman named Eddie Dow -- but that's not why
you're reading about him now. No, what makes the late Mr. Dow
so intriguing is something the cops found in his stainless-steel
briefcase: copies of checks adding up to $108,000 from one
Michael ("Air") Jordan, gravity-defying basketballer. Dow's
lawyer and brother say the checks paid off debts Jordan ran up
in dice, poker and golf games. The N.B.A. superstar also gave
a $57,000 check to golf-shop owner James ("Slim") Bouler, which
a federal affidavit alleges was yet another gambling payoff.
Jordan has broken no laws -- but his all-American image may be
shattered for good.
