  4. Threatened with less spacious digs, drug lord Escobar heads
  5. for the hills

  8.     Without doubt, he was the most pampered prisoner in all
  9. Colombia. Drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, the head of the Medellin
  10. cocaine cartel who surrendered 13 months ago in exchange for a
  11. promise of no extradition to the U.S., was locked up in a suite
  12. in a luxurious prison of his own design in his hometown of
  13. Envigado. By most accounts, Escobar continued to run his
  14. billion-dollar business from behind the walls. So when
  15. Colombia's director of prisons and a deputy minister of justice
  16. entered the jail last week to tell Escobar he was being
  17. transferred to a harsher military prison, the drug boss would
  18. have none of it; his lieutenants produced hidden weapons and
  19. took both men hostage.

  21.     After a night of inconclusive negotiations, 400 army
  22. commandos stormed the jail at dawn and freed the hostages
  23. unharmed, but Escobar was gone. He and his brother Roberto and
  24. nine of their henchmen were nowhere to be found. They had
  25. somehow absconded, apparently with help from prison guards and
  26. military officers whom they had paid off. As troops combed the
  27. surrounding mountains, an embarrassed President Cesar Gaviria
  28. Trujillo, who has come under criticism for dealing leniently
  29. with drug traffickers, could only remark, lamely, "I wish I had
  30. an explanation for everything that has happened."
