THE WEEK, Page 20NATIONET CETERA
END OF AN ERA
He was the first black elected mayor of one of America's top
three cities and has held the job for a record-breaking five
terms, 19 years. But last week Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, 74
-- affectionately called "Mayor for Life" -- announced that he
would not run again next June. Bradley was known as a coalition
builder who opened up government to the city's diverse ethnic
groups, and his departure marks the end of an era. His legacy:
both the resoundingly successful 1984 Olympics as well as the
devastating 1992 riots.
