Access is a very big word in computing. The power of a persons
computer is directly proportional to the information that one can
access. You can access information by telecommunicating, or by
purchasing retail software. Anther manner of accessing information
which can usually be a dead end is by reading disks from other types
of computers. Well the only problem seems to be, that like every
different kind of car uses a different size of tire, so it is the
same with different computers using different disk formats. The
Commodore is a computer which is extremely powerful in this regard,
thanks to hardware which is versatile, and a excellent piece of
software called "Juggler - 128".
Juggler-128 provides temporary support for more than 140 MFM
disk types using a C-128 in CP/M mode with a 1570, 1571 and/or 1581
disk drive. With Jugg'ler, you can read, write and format many foreign
CP/M disk types on your C-128! Juggler is a product of "Herne Data
Systems", written by Miklos Garamszeghy. Miklos is adding more disk
types so Juggler's list of disk types keeps getting larger! It is
menu driven in a very friendly way which minimizes the work of
learning how to use it.
Juggler is a CP/M transient program which when running you have the
ability to analyze disks, and to format disks with any of the listed
disk types! You can scroll forward and backward through a list of
the different disk types and select any of them by simply pressing
A,B, or C. (you can install 3 at the same time!) Once the selections
are made, you simply press the Escape key to exit the program and the
CP/M operating system is now capable of accessing these disk types.
What Juggler does is to add the necessary patches to the running
operating system for accessing the selected disk types. The capability
remains until the computer is reset. Also you have the option to
select 3 disk types and save them as defaults and to reload in the
future with only a couple key presses once Juggler is running. When
you go to access a foreign disk type you will see a window appear at
the bottom of the screen, you just use the upper arrow keys to flip
through the list of disk types Juggler has installed and press return.
It really couldn't be easier!
Thanks to Miklos and Juggler - 128, I recently was able to give a
friend of mine a full starter pack of public domain software. My
friend has a 7 year old Sony computer, which even the people at Sony
had forsaken. I was able to format the disks, and write whole disks
full right in my Commodore 1581 disk drive.
Here is a look at the list of disk types Juggler - 128 can handle:

For those who subscribe to GEnie you will find a 'demo' version
which comes with 10 disk types in the CP/M Round Table, page 687;34.
This is the Commodore C=128 cat. of the CP/M Libraries. It is file
