Sub: CP/M DownLoading From 685 Library #34
This is an open letter to new users of CP/M
In order to D/L from the CP/M Library
you must do it in one of three ways:
1. Using a Commodore Term Program; D/L the CP/M program
to a 'native' (CBM) disk, then using the various
utilities, copy to a CP/M disk after conversion.
2. Use IMP or MEX in CP/M mode, D/L the CP/M files to a
CP/M formatted disk. This method will not work in
'native' (CBM) mode or for native files.
3. Use one of the best term programs for us C-128 users,
Bob's Term Pro 128, which will D/L either native files
to native formatted disks, CP/M files to CP/M disks,
or any combination you want.
Of course, you must have already formatted some blank disks using
the FORMAT.COM on your SYSTEMS DISK.
Lets say you want to D/L a file from the CP/M Library 34, ah, lets
pick file # 6367, called 'PIPMAG1.ARK'. Using IMP, or MEX, the
CP/M Term program, download it to a CP/M formatted disk. You
must now de-compress the ARKed file (note the .ARK tail) by
using 'UNARC.COM' file #5997. UNARC.COM is an uncompressed file
that you will want to download and save on a seperate disk called
Decompression Utilities, or whatever. This file is ready for use.
After typing in the command:
UNARC A:PIPMAG1 A:
the file will be decompressed, ready for use.
You can then delete the original PIPMAG1.ARK file, as it is no
longer needed. We have been using ARKed files in Library 34 as it
is usually the easiest way to quickly decompress files.
Other file 'tails' are:
ABCDEF.COM No decompression needed, D/L and use directly
ABCDEF.ARK D/L and decompress using UNARC.COM file # 5997
ABCDEF.TXT D/L and read this ready to use text file
ABCDEF.LBR D/L and decompress using DELBR11.COM file#209
will also result in further decompression.
ABCDEF.?Q? D/L and decompress with USQ120.COM file# 5996
ABCDEF.?Z? D/L and decompress with UNCR24.COM file# 5998
The .LBR files sometimes need to be first de-lbred, then unsqueezed
or uncrunched using the above utilities. The key is the file tail!
If you see a file name like 'ABCDEF.CZM' then use UNCR24.COM, etc.
Help files: There are many help files available in Library 34 that
are C-128 specific. The best description of decompression that I've
seen is in the PIPMAG1 file, mentioned above. I would strongly suggest
that you also D/L the following files:
STARTUP.DOC #5126 just D/L anf read with W*, VDE, or TYPE
STARTUP.ARK #5125 D/L and UNARK
NEW2CPM.DOC #4961 D/L and read
C128CMPT.DZC #4838 D/L and uncrunch with UNCR24.COM (disk and data
transfer programs for the C128)
MEXHELP.DZC #4377 D/L and UNCRUNCH, help file for MEX.COM
All these help files (there are many more help files!!) are needed to
understand that the compression utilities are used to save you money!!
If you have any further questions, please send E-Mail to me (C128.CPM)
or join us Wednesday nights at 10:00PM EST, in Room 2 of the CP/M RTC.
Just type M685;2 at any GEnie '?' prompt. I will be glad to answer
your questions online, in real time.
Thanx, Bill J.
