INSTANT FACILITIES LOCATOR
This add-on to Microsoft Flight Simulator (MFS) Version 3.0 or
newer for the IBM/Tandy/compatible computers lets you quickly
transport yourself to any airport or other identifiable location.
Instead of typing North and East coordinates, all you have to do is
select from a menu-list of airports and runways. The Instant
Facilities Locator (IFL) will immediately transport you to the
location you choose. The IFL also contains the locations and
broadcast frequencies of all VORs and NDBs, and lets you
automatically tune your aircraft's NAV radios. Only airports, VORs
and NDBs are currently listed in the IFL. Intersections, fixes,
waypoints, and marker beacons may be added in the future depending
on user interest.
There are two versions of the Instant Facilities Locator program.
The Starter Version provided in packages not purchased directly
from SubLOGIC contains a complete list of all airports, NDBs and
VORs located in the five standard scenery areas (New York, Chicago,
Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco) included with the MFS
program.
Mail in the IFL Starter Version registration card and we'll send
you an Extended Version of the IFL program that also contains
database listings for all currently available SubLOGIC Scenery
Disks (including, but not limited to, Scenery Disks #7, #9, #11,
Japan, and "Western European Tour"). This version is usable on
hard disk-based systems only. The IFL Extended Version is only
available directly from SubLOGIC, since it must be regularly
updated as new Scenery Disks are introduced.
Long-run updating of the Extended Version IFL program is available
for a nominal fee (see IFL Update Subscription card included with
your Extended Version disk, or contact SubLOGIC for further
information). This subscription service will provide you with an
updated copy of the Extended Version IFL program after each of the
next three Scenery Disk releases.
INSTALLING THE INSTANT FACILITIES LOCATOR
On a Hard Disk-Based System:
Insert the IFL disk in drive A. Make the hard disk
subdirectory containing the MFS program your default drive
and directory. For example, if your hard disk is drive C
and your Flight Simulator subdirectory is "\flight\fltsim"
you would type:
c:
cd\flight\fltsim
Now run the program called "A:hdsetup". This will load all
the files you need into your MFS subdirectory.
* Starter Version
On a 5.25" Floppy Disk-Based System:
Place your MFS "Scenery" disk (the second disk of the
2-disk set) into drive A, and a non-write-protected COPY of
the IFL disk into drive B. From the A:>, run the batch file
"B:fdsetup" for FS3 and "B:FS4FD" for FS4. This will also
work on a single floppy-drive system, but you will have to
do some disk swapping. This batch file copies some needed
files to the IFL disk that allow it to be used temporarily
as the second disk in the MFS set. When loading MFS, use the
copy of the IFL disk in place of the second MFS disk FOR
INITIAL PROGRAM LOAD only. Once you find yourself sitting on
Runway 36 at Meigs Field, insert the normal second disk into
your floppy drive.
On a 3.5" Floppy Disk-Based System:
Place a COPY of your MFS 3.5" disk in drive A, and your
Instant Facilities Locator disk in drive B. From the A:>,
run the batch file "B:SETUP35" for FS3 and "B:FS4SETUP"
for FS4. Running this batch file will remove the "_"
(Underscored) files from a COPY of FS3 or FS4 and load
certain files from the 3.5" version of IFL. You will not
be able to run both IFL and the flight lessons at the same
time so be sure to use a COPY of FS3 and not the original
disk. This batch file will work with a one drive system,
you will just have to switch disks several times.
* Extended Version
There are too many files on the IFL Extended Version disk
to support user-friendly usage on a floppy disk-based
system.
Running either one of these setup programs attaches a new option to
the NAV/COM menu, usually labeled as option G, FACILITIES LOCATOR.
(This option may be listed later in the alphabet if you also have
other applications loaded.) Select this option by mouse or by
pressing [G] to access the Instant Facilities Locator main menu.
INSTANT FACILITIES LOCATOR MAIN MENU
The lower half of this menu box lists all available airports and
facilities. Each facility has just one menu listing. You can select
the cursor highlighted airport/facility listing by pressing [Enter]
(or by clicking the mouse on [Enter]). Use the keypad [down arrow],
[up arrow], [PgDn], [PgUp], [Home] and [End] cursor keys to
manipulate the list. These key functions are listed in the upper
portion of the menu box, and you may mouse click on a key icon to
perform the same operation. You may also mouse click on a listing
entry to select that entry, or select an item by typing its number.
ALPHANUMERIC FACILITY SEARCH MENU
The main facilities listing is rather large and, while it is in
alphabetical order, you may find it unwieldy because of its size
or because each facility is listed in just one way. For instance,
"New York - John F. Kennedy Intl., JFK" is the main listing for
what you may think of as simply "Kennedy" or "JFK Airport".
Multiple cross-listings are available through the alphanumeric
search menu, accessed by pressing the [Ins] keypad key from the
main menu.
This menu performs a (binary-chop) search of the entire list of
cross-referenced listings stored within each database. This search
is repeated and updated with each keypress. Because some keypresses
can also perform other functions, you must hold down the [Alt] key
while you type each character that is to be part of the search. You
do not have to hold down the [Shift] key, since upper- and
lower-case characters are entirely equivalent during the search.
After each [Alt]+[character] keypress, an updated list of matching
names is presented in the lower portion of the menu box. The same
cursor and selection options available in the main menu operate on
this list.
Note that what you type appears in a different color than the rest
of the text display. The computer will fill out the name that is
currently highlighted in the matching-name listing. The computer
portion is updated as you move the cursor. Select a facility in the
usual way, by pressing [Enter] when the desired facility is
highlighted, by typing the number, or by clicking the item or its
number with the mouse.
Press [backspace] to erase one character at a time; to erase your
entire input, press the [\] key.
The number of matching items is listed below the typed-in string,
as is the sequence number of the name currently highlighted.
AIRPORT RUNWAY SELECTION MENU
Once you've selected an airport (from the main menu or the
alphanumeric search menu), the program displays a list of available
runways. Select the runway you'd like to start from by pressing
[Enter] or the [spacebar] when the desired runway is highlighted,
by typing its sequence number, or by clicking on the runway name or
number with the mouse. Your aircraft will be transported to the
airport and aligned with the selected runway at the threshold
elevation. The aircraft will remain in the same configuration and
flight mode it had before the airport and runway were selected.
From this point you may continue as normal with your flight. If you
later return to the IFL, the menus will still display the same
information as when you last left them, which may save you some
time.
You may notice some gyration and "settling" as you switch
locations. This occurs because the IFL does not know the field
elevation of your destination until it allows the scenery database
to "talk" to it. Things should return to normal in a moment or two.
FACILITY HEADING SELECTION MENU
For all facilities other than airports (VORs, NDBs, fixes,
intersections, waypoints and marker beacons), the previously
flown/slewn altitude MSL (above Mean Sea Level) is used. Where
necessary, ground elevation will be substituted for the previous
altitude to keep you from being transplanted underground or under
water. You may set any desired heading. Use the cursor keys to
increment or decrement the heading displayed at the bottom of the
menu box, or input a 3-digit heading directly from the keyboard
with the numeric keys.
Press the [Ins] key to set a navigation radio (VOR or ADF) to the
frequency of the facility you've selected. Press [Home] to
transport the control tower (for viewing features) to the
coordinates of the selected facility.
When you've set the heading you want, press [Enter] or [spacebar]
to continue. Press [Esc] to return to the previous menu.
LOCATOR SCENERY SELECTION MENU
Files with the extension ".fld" are databases associated with
different scenery areas, and may be selected from the Locator
Scenery Selection menu. Select the file associated with the scenery
area in which you wish to fly. When you select a new data file the
"current scenery:" name will change accordingly. Press [Esc] to
return to the main menu.
Selecting an airport/facility from a different scenery file is much
easier if you use the MFS's automatic scenery loading capabilities.
When this option is activated (from Flight Simulator's SCENERY
LIBRARY menu) you can select any facility from any database whose
associated scenery file is located in your MFS subdirectory.
Scenery file switching is done for you automatically.
If the automatic scenery loading option is not activated, you must
load the associated scenery file either before or after changing
data files from this menu.
