TOPANGA.ZIP DOCUMENTATION
Topanga Canyon / Malibu / Las Virgenes Road Annex
Created with Microsoft Aircraft and Scenery Designer For FS 4.0
This Zip File contains addenda scenery that can be merged with
the Van Nuys File "CAAVNY.ZIP" and the LAX file "CAALAX".
The creation of this file was prompted by my current construction
of an (Agoura-Westlake Vil-Thousand Oaks-Camarillo) Scenery File.
I needed a way to "seamlessly" blend the Agoura file with the
existing Van Nuys and LAX files through mountainous terrain.
Providing a common mountainous scenery through the seam will
smooth this transition. The Agoura file will be made available
shortly.
Mode File "Above Malibu Coastline" has been included. If you
are wanting to view this file as-is without merging into Van Nuys
or LAX, you may have to manually load the Topanga File and turn off
Auto Load because of wide Scenery Boundaries.
A brief tour of this modest scenery addenda.. Using the
"Above Malibu Coastline" Mode file, you start just above
Carbon Beach heading westerly toward Malibu. The Santa Monica
Mountains rise sharply from the ocean. Below, houses along
the ocean appear as you move along the coast. Just past Malibu
Point is Malibu Colony, an exclusive beachside community. Just
into town is another huge complex. Turning northward, you follow
Malibu Canyon Road along a ridge until you reach Freeway 101
at the Las Virgenes Exit. Turning East, you should see 101 rise
up over a ridge and down into the San Fernando Valley right near
Calabasas. Note the car dealership about halfway up the east side.
Now move southward along a modified representation of the Topanga
Canyon area (to fit existing mountains from the Van Nuys File)
until you reach 101 again.
In the extended Agoura file, a more complete representation of
Malibu (Pepperdine University and some Tech Labs) will exist,
along with the Santa Monica Mountains to the West and the 101
corridor as far as Camarillo/Oxnard.
On the technical side, the road rise over the mountains was
created with the help of Levitilt. Roads cannot be Banked or
Pitched, so instead I assembled the roadway using 4000 ft x 42 ft x
3 ft high white walled/grey flat-roofed buildings that look like
3 foot thick roadway. Two were lined up with existing roadway
and then Levitated and tilted at small angles until elevation
matched. Mountains were then carefully built around the
"Highway In the Sky" with the ridges of the mountain following
the Freeway along a precise Elevation line. Levitilt also
allowed me to create the car dealership and place autos on its
roof-top parking lot.
A couple of errors -- the top elevation of 101 is 1265 feet in
this representation. In real life, it appears to top at around
1150 ft, though the ridge it cuts through is much higher. After
repeated experimentation, I settled on the current form because
of the clean match-up and because the slight exageration helps
to show the rise from aircraft elevation. And of course, the
mountain had to be simplified to fit the FS4.0 system, though
prominent ridge tops are reasonably accurate. This section of
the Santa Monica Mountains tops at 2805 -- Saddle Peak according
to my USGS map. The USGS map also shows an Airway Beacon at
the top. Since I am not a Pilot, if something should go here,
let me know! I will incorporate it into the Agoura File
before release.
This file has not been modified with SEE03. If it will benefit,
let me know. I will use SEE03 for the Agoura file.
Enjoy!
