MLBFLA.ZIP contains the following files:
MELBOURN.SC1
MELBOURN.DY1
MELBOURN.MOD
MELBOURN.DOC (this file)
MELBOURN.SC1 contains two airports, both situated along
Florida's "Space Coast": Melbourne Regional (MLB) and
Titusville/Space Center Executive (TIX).
MELBOURNE REGIONAL
Melbourne Regional is the closest commercial airport to
the Kennedy Space Center and is served by Eastern Airlines
and American Airlines (and maybe others). The airport has an
FAA control tower and an FSS. The School of Aeronautics of
the Florida Institute of Technology is based at MLB. This is
the airport at which I learned to fly back in 1968, while a
student at F.I.T. In recreating the airport, I pretty much
followed the Airport Diagram in the Florida IAP book.
The Melbourne VOR (110.0) is located on the field and
to properly place the airport relative to the roads laid out
in SD-7, I moved the SD-7 VOR about 1.5 n.m. SSW. In round
numbers, the field is located at N11338, E19401 and its
published elevation is 35 ft. Fuel is available.
There are three runways:
9L/27R 6000' x 100'
9R/27L 9481" x 150'
4/22 3002" x 100.
The Satellite NDB (257) has been placed 2.1 n.m. from
the threshold of 9R and the published NDB RWY 9R approach is
available, as are the ILS RWY 9R (I-MLB, 108.3), the LOC BC
RWY 27L, and the VOR RWY 9R and 27L approaches.
The MOD file will place you in the Cessna 182 tied down
in the general aviation area. When you ta i out for take-
off, watch out for (1) the student pilot making touch and
go's in a left-hand pattern for Rwy 4 and (2) the Boeing 767
just calling the outer marker, inbound for Rwy 9R.
TITUSVILLE/SPACE CENTER EXECUTIVE
This airport was recreated using the airport sketch
contained in the approach plates. It is the closest public
airport to the Kennedy Space Center. Elevation is 35'. It is
located at N11530 E19319, at the intersection of the 344
deg. radial of MLB and the 096 deg. radial of ORL.
There are two runways:
9/27 5000' x 100'
18/36 6000' x 150'
There is a published NDB RWY 18 approach available
based on the Geiger Lake NDB (375), located 4.4 n.m. from
the runway threshold. Also available is the ILS RWY 36
approach (I-TIX, 108.7).
There is no reported traffic in the area.
Enjoy!
