MOSCOW STATIC SCENERY
(for use with Microsoft Flight Simulator v.4)
The scenery file that comes with this text file has been entirely created
using Microsoft Aircraft & Scenery Designer, with no further processing or
enhancement, so it can be freely edited by means of that program.
Requirements:
- Microsoft Flight Simulator (v.4).
- Microsoft Aircraft & Scenery Designer.
- Sublogic "Western European Tour" Scenery Disk (SD-EUR).
This scenery file includes Moscow very central area, significantly the
Kremlin (where The Grand Palace and Ivan-The-Great's Bell Tower stand out) and
Red Square (with Saint Basil's Cathedral at one end, and The History Museum at
the other), besides some bridges and streets that *I hope* will make the city
look more realistic. The only noticeable features away from that area, are the
National University and Lenin Stadium, both making an interesting ensemble
located a bit Southwestwards. No airports have been included because of the
lack of detailed information.
The city of Moscow, as rendered in Sublogic European scenery, includes
only Moskva River as a single line, which has had to be widened on some areas,
the Kremlin's wall, which has had to be entirely "coated" since the buildings
placed within showed that it was transparent(!), and an empty square line
drawn on the floor next to the wall, which supposedly represents the Red Square
but actually coincides with the site of Saint Basil's Cathedral, being the
actual Square just Northwestwards.
The file is only 11036 bytes big, so no A&SD configuration problems are
previewed, but since most of the included features are closely gathered, the
Image Complexity option (Menu 2-VIEWS, Option E-DISPLAY CONTROL) should be set
to "Complex" in order to see all those features altogether. Otherwise the
furthest ones will disappear from the image.
Besides the scenery itself (MOSCOW.SC1) and this file (MOSCOW.DOC), I have
produced three modes: ready to takeoff at Nurnberg,Germany and Helsinki,Finland
airports (NURNBERG.MOD and HELSINKI.MOD), and also flying low and slowly
towards the Red Square (MOSCOW.MOD), where it should be possible to land by
cutting throttle off right after starting the mode, and smoothly controlling
the elevator. The info sheet enclosed in Sublogic SD-EUR includes some precise
instructions to perform a 10-hours flight from Nurnberg to Moscow via Helsinki.
I simply think that if somebody is willing to computer-fly for 10 hours in
order to reach a place, he or she deserves a somewhat more appealing final
reward than the sparing rendition included in Sublogic SD-EUR.
Finally I would like to state that this scenery has been entirely created
after a tourist's guidebook and some pictures shot by friends who have visited
the city, so I would ask for a little of indulgence for the imperfections (or
those details which I have been forced to solve with imagination because of the
lack of a more precise info).
I would really appreciate any comment about this or other scenery files,
or any other question related to flight simulators.
