Many home gardeners will plant
garlic throughout their other crops
and/or flowers just for the purpose of
keeping pests away from plants. They
simply stick a garlic clove in between
the other plants. Sounds silly but it
works! An organic pesticide!
Do not allow the ground to become
too dry during the growing season. It
doesn't take kindly to being dry. If
you are in a warm climate like Texas,
keeping it moist is doubly important.
Some plants may flower, others will
not. It's not important since we are
not looking for seeds anyway. As the
growing season progresses, many garlic
lovers will cut an occasional green
leaf and use it in salads.

When the cloves are done growing,
the leaves will wither and lie down.
When they turn brown, you can harvest
the crop. I use a finger and lift
the bulb out of the ground. Don't
break off the leaves. Shake off the
excess ground and put them on paper
to allow for drying. It will take a
couple of days.
Now, if you know how to braid, you
can braid the leaves together and
hang your garlic in a dry place. I
don't know how to braid so I save old
mesh onion bags for storage. You can
also use a panty hose tying a knot at
each bulb. Place the next bulb above
the knot. When you want a bulb, you
simply cut the panty hose.
