Family History System
Sample Files
To help you become familiar with the Family History System report
options without having to enter a great deal of data, there are two
FHS sample files on these diskettes. They are in datasets:
GENESIS.ZIP containing GENESIS.NAM, GENESIS.ADR, GENESIS.OTH
and ROYAL.ZIP containing ROYAL.NAM, ROYAL.ADR, ROYAL.OTH.
The GENESIS file contains information for 24 generations of descen-
dants of ADAM as recorded in the book of GENESIS in the Bible. I
created this file during the early stages of work on these programs
to test their capacity for handling very long family lines. The
birth years were estimated by accumulating the ages recorded in GENESIS
and the birth places simply indicate the scripture verse in which the
individual was first mentioned.
While the GENESIS file may be interesting, because of its source, the
lines of descendancy and ancestry do not show much "branching". The
second family file, ROYAL.*, has a much more interesting pattern of
relationships. That file was created by a FHS user and records the
ancestry of Prince Charles of England (ID #1). It has 39 generations
of ancestry for him, which results in quite an ancestor Map. (This
Map does require that you print it in two "strips", using the printer
OFFSET parameter.) Unfortunately, it also hilites the occasional
inadequacy of the FHS name fields, especially when used for recording
title information.
You should copy these family files to a separate data diskette (or
into the FAMILY directory of your hard disk) rather than try to use
them directly from the distribution diskettes. If you are going to
place the files on your hard drive (assumed here to be drive C), then
you should:
Place the B1 diskette in your A drive and enter:
A>PKUNZIP GENESIS C:\FAMILY
and: A>PKUNZIP ROYAL C:\FAMILY
If you wish to move the files to another diskette, then format a
blank diskette and place it in the B drive of your PC.
Then place the B1 diskette in your A drive and enter:
A>PKUNZIP GENESIS B:
and: A>PKUNZIP ROYAL B:
When you start a family session to try out these files, use Main Menu
option F3-A to change the file name table to point to the right drive
and file name.
