│ WhatsNew.Doc: Description of JEPRS' improvements │
╘═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
Changes from version 2.56 to 2.57
NEW ADDRESS
We have moved, and the program and documentation have been
modified to show our new Minnesota address.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINDOWS VERSION
We are now announcing the release of Jeepers 1.0 for Windows.
It requires version 3.0 or higher of Microsoft Windows. It has complete
file compatibility (including both database files and formatting files)
with JEPRS 2.5 for DOS. Jeepers for Windows requires WordPerfect for
Windows, Word for Windows, or AmiPro for Windows in order to print
bibliographies. If your favorite disk vendor or BBS doesn't have
Jeepers for Windows, you can get a shareware disk from us for $5.
Changes from version 2.55 to 2.56
IMPORTING REFERENCES
There was a bug in MedLine importing: If the journal name had
a number in it, it would not import correctly. This has been fixed.
Changes from version 2.54 to 2.55
WORDPERFECT COMPATIBILITY
JEPRS would sometimes stop reading your WordPerfect manuscript
before it found all the reference citations. This has been fixed.
Changes from version 2.53 to 2.54
DUPLICATE CITATIONS IN BIBLIOGRAPHIES
If you cite a reference more than once at the Format Menu (either
in a Number File, Word Processor Input File, or at the Keyboard), JEPRS
will now include it only once in the bibliography (even if the references
are sorted). This feature was added due to requests from users.
ANNOUNCEMENT: JEPRS FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS
JEPRS for Windows 3.0 will be available sometime in 1992. If you
would like to put your name on a mailing list for information when it is
released, please send your name & address to the author.
TITLES IN BIBLIOGRAPHIES
No longer adds a title to your word processor output file (this is
not necessary, since your word processor can do it better)
WORDPERFECT COMPATIBILITY
JEPRS occasionally had problems reading WordPerfect files. It would
sometimes not find any JEPRS codes in your manuscript, even if they were
actually there. This only happened if you had certain combinations of
formatting codes at the very beginning of your WordPerfect document. This
has been fixed.
TOO MANY CITATIONS
If you used the Format menu to format references from a Number file
or Word Processor Input File, and there were more citations than references
in your database (for example, if one reference were cited several times),
JEPRS might crash. This has been fixed.
Changes from version 2.52 to 2.53:
USING JEPRS ON PORTABLE COMPUTERS:
The "Black and White" mode of JEPRS has been modified so that it
works on *all* portable computers.
BETTER DATA SAFETY:
A *rare* problem with the *.Jpr and *.Jpk database files has been
fixed. The problem was that if the power was cut off before JEPRS was
exited, the files were not properly written to disk; when this happened
the files became corrupted and the user had to write to me to get the
database files fixed. This update forces JEPRS to write all the data to
your disk after any reference is added, imported, or edited. This slows
down the operation slightly on floppy disks (hard disks are fast enough
that you shouldn't notice a difference), but provides greater data
safety.
Changes from version 2.51 to 2.52:
CREATING CONFIGURATION FILES:
Beginning with version 2.50, JEPRS gave you a menu option to create
a new config file if it couldn't find the one you specified. That
feature did not work completely correctly until version 2.52.
Improvements from version 2.50 to 2.51:
EUROPEAN CHARACTER SUPPORT:
JEPRS now supports foreign (non-English) characters in the IBM PC
character set. In addition, when JEPRS produces a WordPerfect 5.0/
5.1 output document, it automatically converts the IBM PC extended
characters to the WordPerfect Extended Character Sets.
WORD PROCESSOR SUPPORT:
JEPRS now *automatically* sets the right margin to infinity when
sending references to a Word Processor Output File. (In version 2.50,
you had to modify the printer definition to set "RightMargin=0",
but unfortunately this was left out of the documentation.) This
allows your word processor to set the margins, instead of JEPRS.
BUG FIXES:
Version 2.50 occasionally displayed extra characters when adding
references; this has been fixed.
Improvements from version 2.0 to 2.5:
FORMATTING:
AUTOMATIC BIBLIOGRAPHY GENERATION
JEPRS can now automatically generate a bibliography in either
WordPerfect 5.x or PC-Write 3.0 format. All you need to do is place
special JEPRS codes in your document. For example, if you want to cite
reference #224, then enter "{J#224}" (without the quotes) into your
document. Then specify that file as an input word processor file on the
Format Menu, and the program will read the codes and output the correct
references.
WRITING WORDPERFECT 5.X AND PC-WRITE 3.0 FILES
On the Format Menu, JEPRS can produce your output in PC-Write
3.0 or WordPerfect 5.x format. This allows users to use special func-
tions of their word processor that JEPRS itself doesn't support (such
as full justification, downloadable soft fonts, etc.). This also
prevents you from having to enter printer codes, since presumably
your word processor is already set up for your printer.
SORT BY AUTHOR, YEAR, OR JOURNAL
Sorting by author has long been a feature of JEPRS. But now
with version 2.5, you can sort by author, year, or journal before your
references are output.
INSERT PERIODS AFTER AUTHORS' INITIALS
The standard method for authors' names is like this:
"Miranda LM, Wright WE"
But sometimes you will want formatted output that looks like this:
"Miranda L.M., Wright W.E."
JEPRS now sports the ability to insert these periods after the
authors' initials. You can specify this separately for each
Format Style you create.
SEARCHING:
SORTING IS *MUCH* FASTER
Because of a change in the way JEPRS accesses your computer's
memory, sorting time has been dramatically reduced.
SORT BY AUTHOR, YEAR, OR JOURNAL
As with the Format Menu, you can now sort by author, year, or
journal, instead of just by author.
ADDING/EDITING REFERENCES:
EDIT MULTI-LINE FIELDS AS ONE SCROLLABLE LINE
There are several fields on the Add Reference Screen that are
several lines long, such as title and keywords. In previous versions,
you had to edit each line separately. Due to a number of requests by
registered users, version 2.5 now edits multi-line fields as a single,
scrollable line. This makes it much easier to edit these fields.
MOUSE SUPPORT ON MENUS
New in version 2.5 is the ability to use a mouse for input at
JEPRS' menus. In order for this feature to work, you must have a
Microsoft-compatible mouse, and you must have the mouse driver (called
"Mouse.Com") installed before you start up JEPRS.
REMOVAL OF REGISTRATION REMINDER SCREEN
Registered users of version 2.5 will learn a simple trick that
will prevent the appearance of the registration reminder screen (this
is the Opening Screen that reminds you how to register your use of the
program, and then tells you to "Press F1 for ordering information, or
any other key to continue"). This results in a nicer entry into the
program without any nagging. It is a "Thank You" for paying for the
program.
IMPORTING: MED2GO
Registered users of version 2.5 will receive a free utility
called Med2Go (also available on CompuServe). Med2Go works with JEPRS,
or any other bibliographic system, to read MedLine, BRS/Colleague,
ERIC, PsycLit, and comma-delimited files, and produce either MedLine
or comma-delimited output files.
