Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 19
1 MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is the same date as expert witness report
on nutrition testimonies. Is that the one you want?
2
MS. STEEL: It is 13th January one.
3
MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are both 13th January.
4
MS. STEEL: It is the first one of those.
5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is tab 6.
6 A. Yes, OK, I have that. Can you refer me to a page,
please?
7
MS. STEEL: 95. I am not sure, is that right?
8
MR. JUSTICE BELL: "Factors affecting choice of food", is that
9 it?
10 MS. STEEL: Yes. You are saying that nutrition is not the only
role which influences people's choice in food?
11 A. Can I go on to explain that, because it certainly is
not. There are a whole variety of different factors which
12 influence a person's choice of food. It includes their
own background, what they been brought up to; it includes
13 the cost of food; it includes obviously the type of food
and, above all, it includes what they actually enjoy
14 eating.
15 Q. Right. You mention background, what do you mean by that?
A. I come from the South of Ireland where a stable part
16 of my diet was bacon and cabbage which I learned to eat
when I was quite young -- it is still something I enjoy
17 eating -- that is the kind of thing I have in mind.
18 Q. What about things like when you are young, say, going
where your friends go, things like that?
19 A. Sure. If you go anywhere and you are out somewhere,
to a picnic or to a friend's house or to a restaurant,
20 then maybe that is a factor in your background which
ultimately influences the type of diet and the type of
21 foods that you eat ultimately.
22 Q. OK. What about other influences? What about, for
example, advertising?
23 A. It is a factor, yes.
24 Q. You have also referred to an underlying assumption by our
witnesses that meals purchased in McDonald's make up a
25 major contribution to the diet of customers?
A. Can you give me the reference, please?
26
Q. It is page 1 of that statement. What do you mean by
27 "major contribution" in that statement?
A. Of the order of 50 or 60 per cent of the total diet.
28
Q. So you are talking about two meals a day?
29 A. Of that order, yes.
30 Q. Right.
A. I mean, to such an extent that the composition of the
