Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 20
1 McDonald's products would have a major influence on the
final nutritional composition of the diet.
2
Q. Are you saying that people would have to consume two meals
3 a day at McDonald's before it would make any major
influence on their diet?
4 A. Well, Hang on, hang on.
5 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have to a bit careful about figures
because it was 50 or 60 per cent, so that you then started
6 talking about two meals a day? The answer was "of that
order" and you have gone straight to two meals a day. In
7 fact, it would be three in two days if it was 50 per cent,
would it not?
8
MS. STEEL: If it was 60, it would be much shorter.
9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: It would be just a little bit more. I am
10 just a bit worried about turning figures "of the order of"
into cast iron figures when the arithmetic may not be
11 strictly accurate anyway, but you carry on.
12 MS. STEEL: Once or twice a day?
A. OK. I think there is something I would also like to
13 get clear that, while it is accepted that there are
certain products in the McDonald's range which, in terms
14 of the saturated fat, the fat and sodium, shall we say, do
not actually conform to the recommendations for the
15 dietary guidelines, do not forget that there are also
other products in the McDonald's range which do actually
16 come within the recommendations as far as their
composition is concerned.
17
So, I am just a little bit concerned that because we
18 accept that some of the products in McDonald's do not
actually meet the dietary guidelines, that we do not go on
19 and make the unjustified assumption that all of McDonald's
are outside it, because again, if you remember the
20 exercise that we went through yesterday, both, well,
particularly for the United States, it showed that it was
21 quite possible to have a significant -- a substantial
proportion of meals in McDonald's and still match up to
22 the dietary recommendations.
23 Q. Yes, I think we are going to come back to that. Do you
know what percentage of McDonald's meals come within the
24 dietary recommendations?
A. No. I have never actually done that exercise. Quite
25 frankly, I do not see that there would be any point in
doing so. The important thing is how, you know,
26 McDonald's meals would actually fit in with the total
diet, and whether or not it is possible or whether or not
27 it is easy to go to McDonald's and have two or three meals
a week, shall we say, still have a diet which conforms to
28 the recommendations.
29 Q. Two or three meals a week?
A. Well, again that is just a figure. I mean, in this
30 country the proportion of McDonald's customers who go to
McDonald's more than once a week is very, very small, as
