Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 21
1 I understand it, from the latest market research data.
2 Q. I think we are going to go into that later as well.
A. I believe so. I think for all -- sorry, if I can just
3 make that point clear, in this country, I understand that
it is round about 96 per cent of McDonald's customers that
4 would go there once a week or less.
5 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do not know if it helps at this stage
-- maybe I will leave it for re-examination -- there is,
6 in fact, now a table of frequency of visits which is now
included with Mr. Fairgrieve's statement in tab 3 of
7 yellow V. It may be better not to speculate once again on
what I hope will be a verified matter of fact.
8
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
9
MS. STEEL: I cannot find that page at the moment. We will
10 have to go into that with Mr. Fairgrieve.
11 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You do not have to refer to it in
cross-examination.
12
MS. STEEL: No. But for the people who do eat at McDonald's
13 much more regularly than that -- would you say that
somebody who was eating at McDonald's one or twice a day
14 that would have a major influence on the final nutritional
composition of their diet?
15 A. Well, first of all, let us be quite clear, as far as
this country is concerned, that would be hypothetical but
16 the fact is that, first of all, it would depend on what
they were eating. Sure, if they have a Quarter Pounder
17 with cheese, which is one of the highest in saturated fat,
and they have two or three of those every day, they are
18 probably going to find it difficult, just in the same way
as anybody who has bacon and eggs fairly regularly or has
19 pork pies fairly regularly, there is nothing particular,
in my view, that differs in any way from a whole range of
20 products where the fat content is greater than the dietary
recommendations.
21
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not sure you finished the sentence
22 there, "They are probably going to find it difficult",
difficult to do what?
23 A. Difficult to meet the dietary recommendations.
24 Q. What if they had one a day ---
A. Again we went through an exercise -----
25
Q. -- I mean, so that can you meet it -- just pause a moment
26 --
-- the word in the numbered paragraph 1 on page 85 is a
27 "major" contribution to the diet of a customer. Would
I be wrong in thinking that one meal a day would be major
28 contribution to one's diet?
A. It could be; it would depend on the choice of
29 McDonald's meal combinations. So if it is -- there again
we went through some calculations yesterday, if you
30 remember, and it depends, of course, on the individual
because the recommended daily intake of calories can vary,
