Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 22

1 which we considered in detail yesterday.

2 But with typical McDonald's meals, if they went there once
a day, then on average they are probably going to be
3 having something like 30 to 50 per cent of their calories
in that meal and it may be even a higher percentage for
4 saturated fats. So if that is the case then, clearly,
they have to be very careful about what they eat during
5 the rest of the day if they are to have a diet which
              conforms to the recommendations.
     6
But, again I would reiterate the fact that is completely
7 hypothetical as far as this country is concerned. People
              just do not do that.
     8
         Q. That is another question.
9 A. Yes, OK, but I want to make that clear.

10 Q. Not saying it is not an important question, but it is
another one. So if one had -- well, I have your answer.
    11 Thank you.

12 MS. STEEL: I think you touched on this, but you mentioned in
your statement that McDonalds' food products are not
13 unique. Are similar sorts of foods stuffs but not
McDonald's, as such, the kind of thing that is eaten quite
14 a lot of the time?
              A. Sorry, could you be a bit more specific? What do you
15 mean by similar kind of things and what sector of the
              population are you referring to?
    16
         Q. You see under point 1, you said: "There is also an
17 implication from a nutritional perspective that McDonald's
              products are unique."
    18 A. Yes.

19 Q. You feel that McDonald's products are not unique?
              A. From a nutritional point of view, no.
    20
         Q. Right. Are similar foodstuffs to the kind of things that
21 are sold in McDonald's the kind of thing that is eaten
quite a lot of the time?
22 A. Sorry, what do you mean? Do you mean in nutritional
              terms or in -----
    23
         Q. In nutritional terms.
24 A. In nutritional terms, oh, yes. I think I have, if you
will refer to page 102, or page 19 on my pagination, and
25 page 18, you will see there that I have worked out the
nutritional composition of a number of different foods and
26 given the fat content, the saturated fat content, sugar
              content, fibre content, sodium content.
    27
Then you will see on page 18 in table 4 there are a whole
28 range of very common foods where the fat content expressed
on a percentage calories basis is actually much higher,
29 although there is one there that is actually just on about
34.3, but there are lots of others that are higher, as far
30 as fat, saturated fat; sugar, not so many of those; some
              of them are high in fibre, some of them are low in fibre;
