Day 017 - 25 Jul 94 - Page 13
1 A. Yes.
2 Q. Which is a paper by Laurence Kolonel and others headed:
"Role of Diet In Cancer Incidence in Hawaii"?
3 A. Yes.
4 Q. It was published in May 1983 in the Cancer Research
Supplement. Is that an American publication?
5 A. It is, yes.
6 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You can tell the American medical
publications because they always have a far greater number
7 of people who are claiming some contribution to the paper
than we do in this country.
8 A. Yes.
9 Q. It is probably prestige over there in getting your name on
as many papers as possible.
10 A. It is also financially motivated. If you are going to
be a member of a university, whether you are an associate
11 professor or a full professor will depend on the number of
publications you have. Also to some extent it will
12 influence the ability to raise funds for a particular
institution, so it does have some financial motivation as
13 well.
14 Q. There is one other matter perhaps I can ask Mr. Rampton in
case it becomes important. I heard elsewhere that
15 "authors", in inverted commas, can take it in turns to be
first, second, third or whatever on the list. I hope it
16 is not offensive if I say there is a certain amount of
mutual back scratching so far as that is concerned; is
17 that true or not?
A. I would say that is particularly true in the United
18 States where you have a group of workers and they, as you
say, do take it in turns. We have a slightly different
19 attitude in this country in that the person who is
directing the research or providing the environment for
20 the research to be conducted, his or her name will go last
in the list of authors. The person who really does the
21 hard work, their name will go first.
22 MR. RAMPTON: One notices, in fact, reading through your
references, that there are a couple of gentlemen, one is
23 called Mr. Wynder and one called Mr. Reddy; they seem to
swap around, as his Lordship has indicated. While I
24 mention Mr. Wynder, is he a notable figure in the field of
epidemiology and cancer?
25 A. Yes, I would say he is a notable epidemiologist.
26 Q. This study headed: "Role of Diet in Cancer Incidence in
Hawaii" is an epidemiological study, we can all see, can
27 we not?
A. Yes.
28
Q. It appears to be, am I right, a piece of work done in the
29 course of a longer ongoing study of some kind in Hawaii?
A. That is correct, yes.
30
Q. The principal part appears to be a cohort study; one sees
