material? Does it have the golden arches on it or
       anything?
       A. It just has the logo, the Golden Arches.

  Q. The logo. Have you any idea of the cost of one of those
£300 a year sponsored bins? I mean, the capital cost of
       buying one?
       A. I am not aware of the cost, no.

  Q. Do you know (and if you do not know, say so because we have
a witness who does know) whether or not McDonald's has any
legal obligation to keep the street clean within a certain
       range of its premises?
       A. I know there is a environment/index.html">litter leaflet produced in which it
states that we have an obligation to keep the immediate
area free of our environment/index.html">litter. I am not sure what distance this
is, or I am not sure what the council could do if we did
       not keep within these guidelines.

  Q. Can I just show you a leaflet and see whether this is what
you are talking about? Is this the one you were talking
       about or not?
       A. Yes, it is.

  Q. Do you keep copies of this in your restaurants?
       A. We do, yes.

  Q. If you turn it over -- incidentally, I should draw
attention to the fact that it is published by the Tidy
Britain Group and paid for by the Department of the
Environment. We see inside a number of blue and green
headings, "What are the environment/index.html">litter laws?" and "Who are 'Duty
Bodies'?" We see the duty bodies which have a
responsibility to keep the land clear of environment/index.html">litter and refuse
are mainly local authorities, government departments,
statutory undertakers (e.g. British Rail), most schools,
colleges and universities. Then it tells the reader how
       the duty is enforced.

If you look over to the right-hand inside page under the
heading: "What can local authorities do?" we see this:
"As well as giving new rights to the citizen, the EPA" --
the EPA is the Environmental Protection Act 1990 -- "gives
new powers to local authorities to take action against
individuals and businesses who create environment/index.html">litter, and powers to
get areas cleaned up". Then there is a passage about
individual offences. Can you turn over to the next page
which is an outside page? It says: "Litter-free streets",
       do you see that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. It reads as follows: "Where a environment/index.html">litter problem can be
clearly traced to the owner or occupier of a business, such
as take-away food premises, the local authority can issue a
Street Litter Control Notice. This makes the owner
responsible for keeping the front of the premises, plus a
reasonable distance either side, clear of environment/index.html">litter".

What I was going to ask you was this, in the time that you
have been manager of McDonald's, do you know or have you
