Day 071 - 11 Jan 95 - Page 17

think it is, is it not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What sort of a thing is that?
       A. That is also railed off where there is access.

  Q. It is railed off?
       A. Yes, there is access.

  Q. Is it public land or is it private land?
       A. I believe it says "public land".

  Q. Can we go back to the letter from Dr. Taylor? Before I do
that, I want to follow up one thing you said. Are there
times when the volume of business is simply so great and
generates so much environment/index.html">litter that you cannot effectively deal
with it in the course of a day?
       A. Yes, I believe so because on an average busy hour there
can be up to 200 customers taking their food away.

  Q. Up to 200 taking the food away in an hour?
       A. In a hour. Obviously, within a half an hour period
that is 100 customers, so we may be clear up after 100
customers in that half-hour period. Also in the summer
they do use the squares, Royal Avenue Square, as a picnic
area. There are no bins available in that Square so they
just leave their rubbish on the ground.

  Q. What do you think McDonald's can sensibly do about what
appears to be an ingrained British habit which is to eat
food and throw the packaging on the ground in the bushes or
       over somebody's fence?
       A. Obviously, we can continue to strengthen the trash
walks, but at the same time we can try to inform our
customers that it is responsible behaviour to use environment/index.html">litter
bins after they have taken away their food.

  Q. It would appear -- we will know for certain when Professor
Ashworth has given evidence -- that there are now quite
severe penalties if you happen to be caught for dropping
       environment/index.html">litter?
       A. Yes, there are.

  Q. Did you notice that from the leaflet?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that something of which you, as a McDonald's person,
       approves?
       A. I do, yes.

  Q. Can we go back to this letter from Dr. Taylor? We are on
page 2 of it, page 780 of the file. He continues from
where I have left off. "Perhaps you could reinstitute and
maintain a regular patrol system". I do not need to ask
you about that. You have already answered it. Then he
says: "At our last meeting you may recall that I asked if
you would provide a person to pick up this rubbish on a
full-time basis as apparently you do in Norwich. This
would certainly alleviate the situation and provide a
positive McDonald's image". Do you know anything about a
