responsibility for looking after that plant were happy that
       that was the case.

  Q. But was McDonald's happy?
       A. If we can improve on a system, then we will ask that
that happens, and that is that has happened.

  Q. Sun Valley have been -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think it is fair to assume McDonald's was
content with the situation because there is no evidence at
all of any representation by McDonald's some years ago that
both carotid arteries should be killed so there was no
further blood supply to the brain of the chicken. That is
       fair enough.
       A. Yes, that is fair enough.

MS. STEEL: Sun Valley have been supplying McDonald's for, what
       is it?
       A. Since about '84, I think.

  Q. So, it is only something that you started looking into
after Dr. Gregory made his visit and asked them to make
       improvements?
       A. Personally, that was the first time that I was aware of
       that issue, yes.

  Q. Have you visited any of the other farms supplying products
       for McDonald's?
       A. Sorry, what farms do you mean?

  Q. Pig farms, beef farms.
       A. No, I have never visited any farms of those types.

  Q. Has anybody else in your department that you are aware of?
       A. I would not expect them to have done so; only if they
wanted to out of their own curiosity really.

  Q. What information do you get from your suppliers about
monitoring methane given off by cows?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you get any?
       A. No, I do not see anything like that.

MS. STEEL: You have never asked your suppliers for any
       information like that?
       A. I cannot say I have.

  Q. If anyone was interested in that, that would be your
       department, would it?
       A. We would have to speak to -- we would speak to McKey's
if we wanted information of that sort.

  Q. But it would be your department that spoke to McKey's?
       A. More than likely it would be our department, yes.

  Q. Mr. Oakley said that the suppliers monitor the amount of
sewage produced and the amount of methane given off by
their cows. Are you not aware of that?
       A. No, I am not aware of that. But we do rely very
