Day 101 - 10 Mar 95 - Page 36

heavily on the trust of our suppliers and they, in turn,
follow up on their suppliers. It would not surprise me
that they go to that sort of detail.

  Q. What monitoring of suppliers does McDonald's do in terms of
environmental, social and animal welfare and agro-chemical
       policies?
       A. We monitor all our primary suppliers. So, by primary
       suppliers, I mean McKey's are our primary supplier;
suppliers to them would be the abattoirs or boning rooms,
and then the suppliers to the boning rooms would be the
farms or the auction houses. It is a long chain, and it
would be impossible for McDonald's to monitor every link in
that chain. What we do do is monitor the first link and
impress on those suppliers the need for them to monitor
       further back down the chain.

  Q. What monitoring do you do in terms of environmental effects
       of the animals being reared?
       A. As McDonald's we do not -- I have just said, we do not
go that far back down the chain.

  Q. Can you get the Defendants' First Supplementary List of
Documents? It will be in those blue files at the top.
       A. Bundle 1?

  Q. Yes, that is right, I think. If you could turn to document
       No. 7, please?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How long are you going to be on this point
       for?

MS. STEEL: I do not know really.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Shall we break off there?

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How do you think you are doing?

MS. STEEL: I have not got masses to go, I do not think.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So we will finish comfortably today?

  MS. STEEL: I hope so.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will resume at 2 o'clock.

                         (Luncheon Adjournment)

MS. STEEL: If you could turn to page 21 of the document 7, this
       is the McDonald's Fact Book?
       A. OK. Yes, I have that.

  Q. In terms of the suppliers of animal products, what
monitoring do you do about their effect on the environment?
       A. The effect of animals on the environment, the live
animals, is that what you are talking about?
