Day 101 - 10 Mar 95 - Page 37

  Q. Yes.
       A. As McDonald's we do not do any monitoring of those
       specifically.

  Q. Well, this says under the policy statement what McDonald's
will do and the second one is monitor suppliers in terms of
their environmental and social animal welfare and
agro-chemical policies, so what monitoring do you do of
       your suppliers?
       A. We would monitor Sun Valley; they are our supplier. We
would monitor McKey's; they are our supplier.

  Q. What are you monitoring?
       A. In terms of?

  Q. Those things that are listed there.
       A. OK, well, for instance, "environmental" covers a whole
host of subjects. How do they dispose of their waste? Do
       they recycle their packaging?

  Q. What waste are you talking about?
       A. Factory waste.

  Q. Packaging waste or slaughterhouse waste or animal faeces,
       or what?
       A. Well, in terms of our supplier which is the processing
end of the business, that is what we would monitor.

  Q. What would you monitor?
       A. It would not be live, it would not be anything from the
live animals. Is that what you think?

  Q. You do not do any monitoring of waste from live animals?
       A. No. That is completely down to the suppliers to do.
That is not done by McDonald's.

  Q. But you do not monitor what they are monitoring; you do not
ask them for their records or ask to check their records?
       A. Yes, we check their records. Certainly at Sun Valley
when we visit the growing houses one of the first things we
will do is check the records that are kept in the houses.
I suppose to a degree that measures the environmental
conditions that the animals are kept in from a welfare
point of view, but we do not monitor, for instance, what
they do with the environment/index.html">litter once the house is cleared out. We
know what they do and we are very happy about what they do
with it and if they were doing something with it that we
were not happy about, then we may have something to say.

  Q. You know what they do?
       A. With the environment/index.html">litter from the chicken houses, yes.

  Q. What do they do with the environment/index.html">litter?
       A. It is used as fertilizer.

  Q. All of it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You are not aware of any of their suppliers using it for
       animal feed?
