Day 150 - 07 Jul 95 - Page 06

there long enough to get any pay increase that might be
       available?
       A. I think I had one pay review in the sort of two or
       three months, yes.

  Q. Were you aware of other people receiving such pay
       increases?
       A. Yes, absolutely.

  Q. What was your impression of the style of management in the
store? By that I mean their attitude towards you and other
       people as crew members?
       A. I have said this to sort of people before, but it was
that the style of the Manager himself, first of all, which
led me to contemplate taking a career with McDonald's.
From the very first interview that I had, he just exuded
enthusiasm, proud of his job, proud of his restaurant,
I suppose, with hindsight, and that, needless to say,
permeated through the team, whether it was the Restaurant
Managers or the Assistant Managers, the salaried managers
or the crew. It was a really fun place to work. That is
why I decided to join McDonald's.

  Q. You may have said this, but was there any socialising
       between the crew and management?
       A. I think we had a Christmas party, but I was not --
I was only there until about the beginning of 84, so
I think we had a Christmas social evening, but yes.

  Q. During your time as a crew member, was there any mention of
       trade unions?
       A. No.

  Q. Any other sort of collective activity?
       A. None at all.

  Q. Was there any talk of people wanting trade union
       recognition?
       A. No.

  Q. Was there any talk of people being victimized ---
       A. No.

  Q. -- because of their trade union concerns or membership?
       A. I was aware of no victimization, full stop,
irrespective of what their reasons might have been.

  Q. We have you as a crew member?
       A. Right.

  Q. Where did you go from there in terms of your job?
       A. As I say, I became salaried towards the end of 1983,
and became a Second Assistant Manager working in Newcastle,
and then I think it was February of 1984 I moved to the
Nottingham restaurant still as a Second Assistant Manager.

  Q. So in both those stores, Newcastle-under-Lyne and
Nottingham, you were Second Assistant Manager?
       A. That is correct.
