     3   Q.   Thank you.  Now, if we turn to Colchester and that was 1986
     4        to 1987, was it not?
     5        A.  Yes, March 86, August 87.

     7   Q.   It has become apparent during the case that round about
     8        1987 Colchester was the Store of the Year?
     9        A.  Right.

    11   Q.   I think everybody understands roughly what that means.  Was
    12        that at the time when you were Area Supervisor?
    13        A.  I think the actual award was after I had left, but
    14        I would like to think that some of that accolade was down
    15        to the foundations that were laid by myself.

    17   Q.   When you were the Area Supervisor for Colchester and
    18        Clacton, where were you living then?
    19        A.  Witham, so basically ----

    Q.   For those of us who do not know Essex very well -----
    22        A.  That would probably put me about 15 miles ----

    24   MR. JUSTICE BELL:  I do know that area but Witham is between
    25        Chelmsford and Colchester and then Clacton is out on the
    26        coast?
    27        A.  That is right, sir.

    29   Q.   I meant to ask, when you say Colchester and Clacton, one
    30        store in each town?
    31        A.  Yes, I only had two stores.

    33   MR. ATKINSON:   Am I right in thinking that nowadays it is more
    34        than two generally that the Area Supervisor -----
    35        A.  It may well be up to five or six restaurants as a
    36        general pattern.

    38   Q.   But in those days it was two for you?
    39        A.  Personally for me, it was only two certainly.

    Q.   Can we just consider the position of the Area Supervisor,
    42        the place in the hierarchy, as it were?
    43        A.  Right.

    45   Q.   It is obviously a promotion from Store Manager, as you
    46        said; is it immediately above the Restaurant Manager?
    47        A.  Yes, it is.

    49   Q.   Who is then above the Area Supervisor?
    50        A.  The Senior Supervisor.

    52   Q.   Is that still a post that is around? 
    53        A.  No, I think three or so years ago we took out the
    54        Senior Supervisor level.

    57        A.  At that time it was still a recognised level within the
    58        operations structure.
