Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 10
are no sort of set guidelines of hours of work; it depends
upon the Supervisor in the store.

MR. MORRIS: Let us assume a store has not any particular
circumstances necessitating, you know, a lot of
supervision, such as a new Manager or some crisis with
machinery, or whatever, it is just running along fairly
normally, and a Supervisor has four stores; so how much
time would they absolutely have to spend in a store that
was running normally?
A. I think I would expect them then, if everything was
running well in their group, then once a week visiting the
restaurant.

Q. Half a day minimum on average?
A. I have never really looked at it in terms of setting
minimums, but I would say one day a week.

Q. They should visit?
A. Maybe the first week is a morning shift; the second day
-- sorry, the second time they visit in the second week is
a lunch shift; the third week is an evening shift, and the
fourth time, perhaps, is a Saturday or a Sunday, but to try
to keep it balanced.

Q. Do Area Supervisors work enormously long hours?
A. They work hard. I do not think, to my knowledge, they
work enormously long hours.

Q. They work, what, 40, 50 hours a week?
A. 40 to 50 hours a week?

Q. Yes.
A. Yes.

Q. They have Admin duties and have to write up stuff and have
meetings with other area Supervisors, all that kind of
stuff?
A. I think once a month most Operations Managers will call
their Supervisors in for a meeting or meet out in a
restaurant somewhere; so, yes, and they have some
administration tasks still.

Q. Each week as well?
A. Well, no, they are not as intense as they used to be
when I was a Supervisor. I think I referred to sort of
quarterly HR audits. It was very much based on quarterly,
whereas today with the sort of rolling appraisal system we
are looking for ongoing. So, once again, the idea of when
they visit a restaurant they may have a report to fill out,
but the first time, that first week they will come to the
restaurant, maybe they only fill out the first page and so
on and so forth. They do not come there with a specific
intent to complete that report and go away. The idea is to
get a balanced view across the period.

Q. I am trying to see what -- there is only so much an Area
Supervisor can do in 50 to 60 hours a week.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What would help me most, Mr. Morris, is if
