Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 24

       Floor Manager?
       A. I do not recall any instances of that. Certainly in
terms of ensuring -- because a Floor Managers'
responsibility or principal responsibilities were in the
sort of area running within a particular shift, so they
would be in charge of a grill area, or a grill team or a
front counter team, I would certainly be looking for people
skills, corrective coaching and training skills and perhaps
-- well, in my opinion, the best way to do that is via
working through training squad, first of all, rather than
running a whole area. In my recollection -- certainly when
I was a Manager every person who became a Floor Manager
went through training squad first. So, there was a sense
of promotion and achievement as you progressed.

  Q. Right. Would there have to be a crew person for a certain
length of time before they could be in the training squad?
       A. Again, no, not to my recollection. Again, trying to
recall, I am pretty sure again that I had people of varying
abilities -- sorry, of varying lengths of time with me.
Some progressed very quickly, had a very relaxed,
well-balanced personality, could put people at their ease,
and there were people who had been working for years and
years at the store but just would not (and probably never
have) made good training people. So, there has never been
after six months when I was Manager that you would be
       eligible to become ------

  Q. But would anybody be likely to be made one of the training
squad people if they had been there for less than three
       months or something like that?
       A. Again, I would think it probably unlikely that someone
would have gained enough experience in the restaurant to
warrant it. It is down to the individual but, in my
experience, I do not think I have come across anybody who
has done it in three months. I think I would be looking
for a slightly longer look at the person concerned before
willing to put them into such an area of responsibility.

  Q. Then, presumably, you would also want them to be in the
training squad for sometime before promoting them to being
       a Floor Manager?
       A. Again to ensure that they had learned enough and that
they had the necessary skills to move on to, sort of,
greater levels of responsibility, I would expect them to
spend sometime as training squad, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you want to take the break there and in
any event you can then take stock of what further
       cross-examination -----

MS. STEEL: I do not think there is very much left.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is what I wondered and wonder,
therefore, if we took the break now you could include in it
the usual break that you have when you have more or less
got to the end and just want to check that you have.

MS. STEEL: Yes, OK, if we could just have 10 minutes?
