Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 25

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

                      (Short Adjournment)

MS. STEEL: Mr. Stanton, you mentioned that the labour rate at
Leicester was about 15 per cent. Do you know what it was
       at Colchester, do you remember?
       A. Well, no. When I said the labour per cent was 15 per
cent in Leicester, in terms of looking at your figures or
the figures that I gave you that were written down, to
determine whether or not I had them vaguely correct, that
is where I got 15 per cent from. It is my recollection
that would have been probably about the figure.

  Q. Right. Would that be about the same at Colchester?
       A. Anywhere between about 14 and 16, I would have
thought. I cannot remember specifics but .....

  Q. OK. Do you know a Manager called Caroline Blick?
       A. Caroline Blick?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Yes, I think I do.

  Q. She was a Manager of a Leicester store?
       A. Yes, she was the Manager of Beamont-Lees.

  Q. That is not the same one that you were at?
       A. No, no, no. She was not the Manager when I was there.
I think she was the Manager in about 1988 probably.

  Q. But, in any event, it was a different branch to the one
where you had previously been a Manager?
       A. Yes, it was, yes.

  Q. OK. Was hers a busier store or a quieter store?
       A. No, Beaumont-Lees was a quieter store.

  Q. If you were short staffed in a store ---
       A. Right.

  Q. -- would crew be sent home if they had not polished their
shoes or they were looking not as smart or they were
looking a bit scruffy or something like that?
       A. In terms of appearance, I think the times when it would
occur, certainly when I was a Manager, were dirty uniforms
and if the men were unshaven, not in terms of, you know,
moustache or whatever, but unshaven when they normally
shave, and those I can recall is probably the main two.

  Q. But if you were short staffed would you ---
       A. Oh, absolutely.

  Q. -- send them home?
       A. Absolutely. In terms of not wanting to compromise a
standard just because we were short staffed, I would rather
work harder myself and stay there longer and call somebody
in rather than give the appearance that I had double
       standards, yes.
