Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 26

  Q. So you would rather create dangerous working conditions
because staff would have to work a lot faster than have
someone in who looked a little bit -----
       A. No, I said -- no, no, I would phone people in, but if
that meant having to work longer myself or harder myself
until those people came in, then, yes, that was an
unfortunate necessity in terms of maintaining a standard
and consistency from the Manager to his crew or to my crew.

  Q. This was while you were a Manager, was it?
       A. I can give you sort of that as a categoric when I was a
Manager, and it was something that I -- a philosophy, if
you like, and something I followed up on as a Supervisor.

  Q. So when you were a Supervisor, you are saying that you did
this while you were a Supervisor as well or was it you just
        -----
       A. Well, I would not do it personally, but I would
certainly bring it -- if I was in the restaurant or came
into the restaurant -- to the attention of the shift
running Manager or if the Manager himself was around or
       subsequent telephone -----

  Q. It would be up to them to sort it out?
       A. Yes, yes, I mean, I was not running the store, but it
was part of my responsibility to, I think, if you like,
educate some of the younger Managers. I think some of the
Floor Managers particularly where -- they may have been
quite happy, I think, to have allowed people who were not
of the sort of correct appearance to stay on, but who were
happy, rather, for them to stay on, then it is a matter for
       me explaining why.

MR. MORRIS: I think we have finished; we are just making a last
       check.

  MS. STEEL: No further questions.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

                    Re-examined by Mr. Atkinson.

  Q. Mr. Stanton, I have one further question in
re-examination: Can you turn to pink volume XI and then it
is tab 1, it is page 37 of the bundle and 36 of this
       particular document.
       A. "Holiday Entitlement"?

  Q. Do you see where it says that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you just read that to yourself?
       A. OK.

  Q. That is the Crew Handbook from 1986. Does anything in
there not correspond with your understanding of the
arrangements for holiday pay at that time?
       A. From what I can recall, this is consistent with my
       memory.
