Q. In what capacity did you join McDonald's in September 1982?
A. As a Trainee Manager.

Q. What prompted you or, perhaps I should say, tempted you to
join McDonald's?
A. I believe I saw it in a student recruitment advert, and
I had been into McDonald's previously two or three years
before at one of the London ones, although there were not
that many about; liked what I saw and decided it seemed
quite an exciting job.

Q. Then I think you started in Peterborough; is that right?
A. That is correct.

Q. Did you have an academic qualification that was suitable
for work as a Trainee Manager?
A. I had A levels and an HND in Business Studies.

Q. What is an HND?
A. It is a two year course -----

Q. No, I mean, what does it stand for?
A. Higher National Diploma, sorry.

Q. In Business Studies?
A. In Business Studies, yes.

Q. From, I think, the North London Poly, is that right, as it
was then?
A. That is correct, yes.

Q. How soon did you get promoted from Trainee to, as it were,
proper Manager?
A. 16 weeks approximately, as far as I remember.

Q. Where was your first job as an Assistant Manager?
A. Still at Peterborough.

Q. When did you first go to Colchester?
A. As a First Assistant, approximately a year later.

Q. So are we now in 1984?
A. Yes, that sounds right.

Q. I know you are rotten at dates. My Lord, perhaps I can
prompt him.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): June 1984, is that about right?
A. That sounds right, yes.

Q. You worked in Colchester for how long before you became the
Manager?
A. Approximately a year.

Q. Right. How long did you remain as Manager of the
Colchester restaurant?
A. I believe about two years.
