behind those. Mine are numbered at the bottom,
     Mr. Morris.

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So if you have put them in a different
order, give the page number at the bottom first.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, it is 33. I am looking at the 1985 September
PR for Mark Davis, a Store Manager. Just a couple of
points to note there. In the second paragraph under
"Self-development", the second sentence, "With stores
soon to open in our area, the possibility of promotion to
Supervisor within six months is more than remote, and you
should now be gearing your work performance and results to
opening a gap between yourself and the other Managers in
my group". Were you aware at that time of promotion
     possibilities for Mark Davis?
     A. Yes. I mean, he was hotly tipped to be promoted.

Q. He was being expected there to -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is no need to put your own
interpretation of the document by way of a leading
question, unless you think there is some particular
important material to be added or that the meaning is not
perfectly clear, I would leave it where you have got to
     now.

MR. MORRIS: If we note under Crew and Management Development,
third sentence, it says: "It now seems that you are also
under crewed". So, that is a recognition of what you said
before, yes, about that being a .....
     A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you with that? I have got it,
     yes.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, what was the question?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I had not found the sentence you have read,
but I have found it now.

MR. MORRIS: Over the page, page 34, second paragraph: "Crew
levels together with management training should be your A
priority over the next two months bearing in mind the
Christmas high volume period". But it is your evidence,
I think, you gave that crew levels were always a problem,
     despite being identified in PRs?
     A. Constantly a problem, yes.

Q. Then under "Administration and Training", the third
sentence, starting: "I see systems and charts but get the
impression their up keep depends more on coming audits,
raps and full fields and ongoing drive". Is that similar
to what was said about you about sprucing things up for
     the purpose of inspections?
     A. You could see that, sort of, going on the same lines
     as that.
