Day 204 - 15 Jan 96 - Page 06
A. I would say that was early on in his management.

Q. Were you a Trainee Manager by that stage, or a Second
Assistant or a First Assistant, or what?
A. I cannot recall whether I was a full Manager or a
Trainee Manager.

Q. So, is it your understanding that under Ray Coton the
watering down of food products only happened a couple of
times?
A. The only instance I can remember, the ketchup and
mustard -- I cannot recall which one it was -- and the
actual mix, yes.

MS. STEEL: Sorry, do you mean the shake mix?
A. Sorry, yes, the shake mix.

MR. MORRIS: So far as you know, it only happened on one or two
occasions, literally?
A. Yes, but there were rumours that it happened more than
once.

Q. We are talking about your knowledge, yes?
A. Sorry?

Q. You only know once or twice?
A. On two occasions, yes.

Q. In a period of something like -- how long were you in the
Colchester store under Ray Coton? About 18 months?
A. As a Store Manager?

Q. Yes, as a Store Manager. I make it about -- hang on, from
8/87 to 6/89 -- two years?
A. Actually, I left in the March, the April, and actually
went to Clacton as a First Assistant.

Q. You were at Clacton as a First Assistant; is that correct?
A. Actually, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When did ------

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, that is just on the chart. It does not say
Clacton.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: In your statement, you say: "On 1st February
1989 I became First Assistant"?
A. Yes, I did, yes; and then two or three months later
I went to Clacton. Shortly after then, I got promoted in
the Clacton restaurant.

MR. MORRIS: This with the watering down of food products -- let
me think about this.

MS. STEEL: You mentioned about the shake mix, was it that
Ray Coton was showing you how to water down the shake mix
or that you saw him doing it?
A. I witnessed him doing something in the cooler to that
effect, yes.
