Day 251 - 17 May 96 - Page 14

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It would and then Mr. Morris will ask you his
       questions.
       A. Well, the parrot's beak is the area which is now in, as
I said, the recently formed state of Tocantins. It is
this, if you go up the Serra do Estrondo, which you can see
that in the north of the state of Tocantins, there is this
mountain range. When it comes to Garatino(?), Gaepaco(?),
it comes to Campo -- you go up north, you come to Campo
Alegre, then there is a region round there which does not
actually look much like a parrot's beak on this map, but
       was -----

  Q. Is that the top of the parrot's beak?
       A. It is this, if you go -- it runs from Campo Alegre
right up to Maraba. It is a region which, sort of, bends
over and it then goes west to the Maraba. If you follow
the river, you can then see that that turns round, and it
looks like, at least for the Brazilians it looked like, a
       parrot's beak.

  Q. Where do you go from Campo Alegre?
       A. You go from Campo Alegre up to Toncantinopolis, then up
to Imperatriz. That is the top of the parrot's head. Then
you bear west to the Maraba, and that region round there,
the parrot's beak, is the region which was, in those days
was, in the state of Goias and had an enormous amount of
conflict. It is now in the state of Tokantins.

  Q. Let me just make my note, please. Are you saying that was
       in the state of Goias?
       A. That was in the state of Goias originally in the early
years until I looked it up when it was from 1989.

MR. MORRIS: We have the list that we received from Mr. Morganti
of the collection points which are currently used to
collect cattle from the surrounding area and transported to
Goiania for slaughter to provide to Braslo for McDonald's
products. We do not know all the collection points and
sources in Goias state, or what was Goias state in the
1980s, for Goiania and McDonald's products, but even from
what we do know about where they are collecting now, the
land conflicts which you talked about, how does that relate
to what is now Goias State and to the very south of Goias
       State, say, south of Goiania?
       A. Sorry?

  Q. You have had a chance to look at the list from Mr. Morganti
        -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think it is only fair that Miss Branford
should have the list. I have put it in 81E of yellow 14
behind Mr. Morganti's previous statements, but if there is
a spare copy -- I do not know whether it is there yet,
       Mr. Riley.

MR. RAMPTON: There is a spare one, my Lord. It has a yellow
blob on it but that was an accident; it is of no
       significance.
