Day 268 - 24 Jun 96 - Page 05

Paul and Helen turned up. Then everyone went to the pub.
I left 9.45." So between 7 and 9.40 pm you were answering
       letters with everybody else?
       A. Probably yes.

  Q. Some of which were about McDonald's and so you would have
       been sending out antiMcDonald's leaflets?
       A. I cannot remember exactly, but it is a likelihood.

  Q. Right. Do you remember - well, you cannot remember
exactly. And within five minutes of myself and Paul
turning up, everybody went to the pub?
       A. That is what my notes say, yes.

  Q. Right. There was not -- there did not -- when we turned up
there did not follow a long discussion about the London
       Greenpeace fair?
       A. Not that I have made notes of, no.

  Q. The meeting of 9th August.

  MR. RAMPTON: 169, my Lord.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

MS. STEEL: Now, you said in your last statement about this
meeting, it is in paragraph -- well, it is on page 5,
       paragraph (iv).
       A. Sorry, what statement page?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 5C in section 5 on the last page, paragraph
       (iv).
       A. Thank you.

MS. STEEL: This is the meeting at 5 Caledonian Road. "Jane
Charlotte, Jonathan, old bloke who looked like Old Bill, an
anarchist from York. Andrew turned up later." When you
were used the phrase "Old Bill" you are talking about a
       Policeman?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So you thought he was either looking or acting suspicious
in terms of what the group was sort of -- in terms of the
reason why he might be at the group?
       A. No. He stood out as, in my eyes, somebody that looked
       like an exPolice Officer.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I think what you are being asked was
did he look like an exPolice Officer period or he looked
like someone who might not be a bona fide member of the
group but there for investigation purposes?
       A. I cannot - what physically he looked like on the day I
really cannot recall, but in my eyes he looked like an
exPolice Officer. He was casually dressed or he would have
been casually dressed. In my eyes that is what he looked
like. What other inferences can be drawn, I cannot
       comment.

MS. STEEL: You have got "organisation of the McDonald's fair
very much in progress." Why did you put the McDonald's
